new monitor

2009-03-27 by AnnMarie

Hi gang -

I am sure this topic has been covered before but frankly, I am too lazy to research old posts. My old Apple G4 - second generation is finally limping to the finish line. I have been using it with a Viewsonic 17 inch monitor for 10 years and it has been great with Photoshop. I have a Macbook that I may just buy a monitor for or a new tower. Either way - knowing that CRTs are no longer in production, the few flat screens I've tried have given me (and probably many others) issues with seeing details in the blacks due to the extreme levels of contrast. Are there ones that are better than the others? My work is primarily black and white so obviously, seeing the whole tonal range is best.

thanks,
AnnMarie

Depends on how much you want to spend, look at the Eizos, excellent.

Hello AnnMarie,

A few months ago I purchased a Samsung LCD monitor to replace a CRT. It needed some tweaking from the factory setting plus calibration. I still can see traces of color in grayscale images, even in stepwedges. But, for color, it's simply excellent.

Even after calibration I still had to lower monitor brightness as my prints were really too dark compared to the screen image.

Here's a review of 22" LCD monitors

Review of 23-28 inches monitors.

There is a wide range of displays available, and you simply can't
compare the low cost ones to the midprice ones (which most people
would consider high priced) or either of those categories to the high
end graphics displays. However, its not just the screens, its the
color management: without controlling your ambient lighting, and
balancing the screen's brightness to that, you are not going to see
the shadow detail, even if the display can present it...

That's where I usually check the specs too.
Especially the last link and the choice of "Calibrated Colors" there.
While the gamut size may be important for color work you should first
check the quality of the black and the contrast range for B&W work
followed by screen evenness.

Hello Mark,

Eizos are not included in their usual test reviews (don't know why) but are included in their face-to-face comparison.

If you can't stretch to for eg an Eizo, this Dell looks like the best of the budget monitors, being the only IPS panel at that price (e-IPS whatever that is).

Thanks to a previous post by Richard I bought the Dell - (referenced above).
I got it for about $239 by calling Dell and asking for a deal. I calibrated
the monitor to use with a Mac book and its working great - - especially for
the price!! I would highly recommend the monitor for a low budget monitor.

On the other hand, (JP Caponigro, Maisel, Holbert, Schewe) are recommending
the NEC: I chose to use the NEC LCD2690WUXi because it had the right
combination of resolution, wide screen display, wide color gamut and yet
extremely accurate profiling so I could rely upon what I saw on the display.
I use it day in and day out and it's proven trustworthy. As a visual artist,
everything depends upon what I see. - Jeff Schewe // Also see:

Like the Eizo, the NEC is a big step up in price from the budget-level Dell.

I run a dell 24" high dif model. It cost about 575 a year ago. Calibrate it
with an Eye One and have no problems making matching prints. Card reader
built in, DVI, usb, . If you are running a smaller studio without much
output going to other output devices, I really don't see a need to go out
and over spend on your monitor. I'd say more problems with monitors are
associated with their surroundings being non color managed than the monitor
itself; Bad mixture of surrounding light sources, wall or table colors,
floor covering, etc.

I would also chime in that cheaper monitors have a much higher degree of brightness variability in a vertical direction which makes head placement critical when judging brightness/lightness for prints. You can only tell if this is going to happen by actually viewing the monitor in action at a store or a friend's house. Some are very good with no variance and some are awful and you will drive yourself nuts with brightness/lightness match problems. I currently have some problem in this respect and am struggling a bit on what to do about it without breaking the bank.

The Dell I referenced earlier is an eIPS panel, and it doesn't have this
problem.
