A few months ago I purchased a Samsung LCD monitor to replace a CRT. It needed some tweaking from the factory setting plus calibration. I still can see traces of color in grayscale images, even in stepwedges. But, for color, it's simply excellent.

Even after calibration I still had to lower monitor brightness as my prints were really too dark compared to the screen image.
