Premier Art Hot Press 325

Premier Art Hot Press 325

2006-10-26 by Paul Roark

I'm doing a project for the local museum that involves scanning and printing
their old photos. I specified Premier Art 325 Hot Press due to its lack of
OBAs, smooth surface, and top notch fade resistance in my tests. My old
samples of the Hot Press 325, however, had a rather modest dmax. I just
received a batch of new paper for the museum project, and it's hitting 1.7
dmax. Way to go Premier Imaging!

Very glad you posted that, Paul. I'm looking to switch from HPR and think I'll give that
paper a try.

Thanks for sharing,
Sarah

Paul, Thanks for the great tip. I just bought a
supply of PA as I transition from HPR. In your ICC
for this paper for the 220-R2 does "CC-0" mean Color
Controls unchecked?

Thanks again...

I sometimes have an ICC for when the driver is set to No Color Adjustment
(NCA) as well as another ICC for when the driver is set to Color Controls
(but with them set to zero, the default, center position). So, if "CC" or
CC-0" is in the name, have "Color Controls" checked. What this does is
allow you further control via the sliders. I may be able to detect with a
loupe a very slightly better image when NCA is checked, but having the
sliders available is another layer of control that is readily available to
tweak a system further, and no 2 machines, paper or ink batches are
identical.

Thanks Paul! I don't mean to sound dense -- but if I
understand correctly: "CC-0" means the profile usually
works best for you with Color Controls <checked> but
with the sliders at the <0> position but that you
sometimes adjust the sliders to compensate for batches
of paper and ink and also to allow for variation of
other's printers?

At present with your latest batch of PA what slider
positions do you favor?

Thanks again for all this work you do for us...

Since the ICC was made with my system, paper, and ink batches, and the
sliders set to "0", that is what works best for me.

Yes, it's primarily for others. I don't generally use the sliders.

Paul,

Where are you buying this paper? USFA has been my paper of choice in
the last 6 months, and my understanding is that these are the same. I
do wonder if they are the same base only, or if they have the same
coating as well. Anyway, I'd like to do some testing.

Thanks for posting.

Josh

Josh,

I usually use the 205 weight because of cost. The 325 is for a museum
project where I was not paying for it.

I used Epson UltraSmooth for a while also -- still have a little left. It's
250 weight. The Epson pro media person once told me that Epson has an
exclusive on some of the paper weights and sizes. Aside from that, it was
my understanding that they were virtually identical. Whether they have
diverged since that time is an open question. The latest Hot Press coatings
appear to be slightly different than the original -- better dmax, for
example. I've noticed that the various weights of the paper also profile
slightly differently. So, I can't say they are the same, but they are
closely related both in base and coating.

I ordered 8.5 x 11 and 13 x 19 sizes from Atlex and
both were back-ordered for about 3 weeks -- I'm still
waiting altho' the price was good so I'm hanging
