Problems with thr Epson R800

Problems with thr Epson R800

2006-03-13 by piero chessa

Dear all,
I have been using the Epson R800 for a good two years
now and I have been pretty happy with its black and
white results. There were sometimes some metamerism
but I would say that the quality of my print was
excellent. All of the sudden, and having done nothing
special both with Photoshop and the printer drivers,
my prints start to come out with a annoying pinkish
tone. I am not able any longer to get old prints as
they were despite I strictly follow the same workflow
as before. Nozzle are OK if you are wondering. I have
uninstalled and installed the drivers over again but
with no results. I have tried to use only Photoshop
with no color management from the R800 but the
results are worse.

There is anyone who are experienced similar problems
and if so was he/her able to solve the problem ? I am
really worried non to be able to get a decent B&W any
longer with this printer.

Thanks,
Piero

That sounds like a fairly typical experience for trying to use color
pigments to generate B&W prints. I'd guess most of us tried to do so at
some point and gave up. That's a major reason why the dedicated B&W inksets
exist.

More specifically, the major issue is whether the image is composed mostly
of neutral (warm, actually) carbon or not. The 2400 with the carbon based
LK and LLK inks can also make good B&W images.

For top quality B&W, most recommend printing with an inkset that uses
predominantly carbon to make neutral images.

Just trying to eliminate some variables...

Has the viewing light changed? e.g. from tungsten to fluorescent?

Do the prints match the screen (assuming you're using a colour managed
workflow of course) ?

Have you upgraded the Epson driver software?

Are you using Epson OEM inks? If so, is the country of origin (marked
on the cartridge box) the same as previously?

If you're on Windows, is/are the Epson profile(s) still associated
with the printer?

Regards

Alan

Alan,
I did everything you mention. It appears like all
started when I replaced the magenta cartridge (mind it
was not the first replacement but maybe the fith or
the sixth...). Yesterday I tried all I could over
again but still, no results. I really do not know what
do now...

As for using the carbon based inks I would agree with
Paul were it not for the fact that there nothing on
the market for the EPSON R800...

Any other suggestion is welcomed guys.
REgards,
Piero

There are B/W inks for the R800. You can find information about
Neutral K7 inks at http://www.inkjetmall.com/store/bw2/index.html
I no longer have an R800 and never tried those inks, but piezography
inksets has had very good reviews in the past.

Hope this helps

Does anyone on the list have experience with the K7 inks on an 800 or
1800?

Hi I'm new to the group. A related question to the R800 since I have the
r1800...
I've heard good things about the K7 ink too. But there're quite expensive to
buy by cartridges because I only have one printer and planning to swap them
for B&W one needed.
Do they sell them in bulk like other 3rd party color ink set? I still have a
set of blank cartridges and I would like to be able to use them w/ the
refill method.
thanks,

xun
