I have images in an upcoming show printed on Somerset Photo Enhanced Velvet via an Epson 9600 through Imageprint 5.6. One is grayscale and two are full color. How do you represent these images to the public for sale? Have you had questions asked as to what you meant. I have been displaying tradtional silver gelatin prints for a while and am at the stage where I feel comfortable with my portfolios of digital images to seek gallery shows. So, what do you call your prints?

This has been discussed to the point of being a flaming discussion. Look in the archeives.

"ink prints" or "pigment ink prints" If it's good enough for John Szarkowski, it's good enough for me...

When I exhibit my own work at a gallery, I avoid the term Glicee, for a number of reasons... I personally avoid any connotation the presented image is a gelatin and, or silver print for obvious reasons. ³Digital Fine Art² is a good, but very broad term. ³Carbon Ink Print² is an excellent term if you use that ink set. And, as Tim suggested earlier, ³Ink Print² and, or possibly ³Pigment ink Print.² jim k [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I only use the word "Giclee" when referenceing a reproduction, not an original. So, for instance, a Painting or Watercolor which has been photographed or scanned and then reproduced I would call a "Giclee". If its a work of art which has never existed in print form before being printed, then I refer to the exact technology used. Thus, Pigment Ink Print or Carbon Pigment Ink Print. Some will just say Ink Jet Print which is too generic for me. Historically, Photography and Museums have always referred to the technology used to make the print when describing it. Ie. Silver Gelatin Print, Chromogenic Print, Dye Transfer Print, and so on. The term "Giclee" is very generic in one since in that it simply translates "to squirt" or something similar. The term has seen its most use as describing a means of reproducing an original thus my reasoning. In the general publics mind, its a pretty "fuzzy" term so you will find many who do not know exactly what a "giclee" is. The History of the Iris Printer, how it was first used for just proofing, and then how Nash started using it for Fine Art, High Quality reproductions would need to be referenced to explain things more fully. Nashes assistant just came up with the term "Giclee" to differentiate what they were doing with the Iris Printer versus what it had always been used for. That's a quick history. Don't kow how much of all that is in the Archives... --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, Tom Baker <tbaker1328@...> wrote: > > This has been discussed to the point of being a flaming discussion. In recent gallery shows, I have seen works labeled "carbon print" (monochrome) and "Epson print" (color) displayed next to traditional "silver gelatin prints" and "C-prints" by the same artist. At one of these shows, I amused myself by trying to identify the printing method before I got close enough to read the card. Bob

I agree, it may be ambiguous or worse, even if it is accurate in some technical sense. And thanks for reminding me: "archival pigment print" and "pigment ink print" (as you do) are also terms I have seen used at various times to refer to Epson pigment-ink output. I call them photographs. If that's not sufficient, I say they are produced digitally. If that's not sufficient I indicate that they are archival and will last a very long time and I hope to be around long enough to see them disintegrate. maybe 100 years or so. So that's what you put on the descriptive label describing your piece beside your print, "Photograph" or that lengthy vague paragraph saying that they will last a very long time blah blah blah... Never seen that one used in a gallery or Museum yet which is what the original question concerned. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "jcap40" <gtmlabels@...> wrote: > > I call them photographs. For the small label on the wall, next to the framed print, I describe as "Archival Pigment Print" On the back of the framed print, I have a 4" x 2 1/4" label attached to the dust cover with more information. I hope this post is not too OT. It is a plug of sorts, but also a possible workshop opportunity for this forum. One of the groups I'm associated with is the Golden Trout Natural History Workshop. It is a small, non-profit, informal group that has nothing to do with fishing. It is an education-oriented organization that facilitates access to the High Sierra environment (over 10,000 feet). While it was originally formed by naturalists, and a professional naturalist will always be at camp to do interpretive hikes, etc., the camp's educational activities can also include a photo workshop. And that is what I'm proposing here. I'm trying to determine whether there is enough interest to devote one week to a B&W photo workshop -- maybe limited to 10 or 15 participants. I see the camp as a great photo opportunity. It is the easiest way to get to California's High Sierra Wilderness areas. This is the only camp that has been allowed in the wilderness due to unique historic reasons. The photo ops include the 100 year old log cabins, lakes, meadows, knarly Foxtail pine stumps (close relative of the Bristlecone pine), and all sorts of dramatic landscapes. See a few of my shots at http://home1.gte.net/res0a2zt/GTthumbnails.html. The camp is about 3 miles from the end of the road. There is a packer at the end of the road to carry things in if needed, thought I usually just pack my camera equipment and personal things in myself. The camp provides the food and tent cabins. This is a wild bargain. The cost is only $395 for a full week of food, lodging, expert naturalists, and the one hack photo workshop leader -- me. This year's middle section (July 2 through July 8) has enough room to devote the entire week to a photo workshop -- shooting and talking photography. There is no wiring to the camp, so computers and printers will not be taken. I'm also going up the previous session, but if we have enough people interested from here, I'll stay up there and devote the week to leading hikes to my favorite photo shoot locations. The hikes would average 3 miles, with some more ambitious for subgroups who are interested. Contact me off list if you are interested. I think it could be a fun week. Paul www.PaulRoark.com

"Digital Photograph" generally, in the last few gallery shows I've done. Didn't have a problem with that. Usually people are attracted to the photograph, not the descriptive label. Thanks Dick. I use a USB-based Dymo LabelWriter printer. Makes it real easy. Also do the wall labels with a smaller label. It's a handy device. Steve, You should list the media honestly, exactly as it is. That is the professional way museums prefer. I have seen art in major museums listed as Epson ink jet prints or Dura bright. Can't imagine why the word pigment bothers you. It's as old as art itself - has nothing to do with swine:-) So called "Giclee" is a joke more to impress the ignorant and nobody can pronounce it. The Golden Trout B&W Photo Workshop is happening. We have all the approvals to have the workshop for up to 15 people -- the group maximum limit for Wilderness areas. It's scheduled for July 2 through July 8. The camp is located just west and 6000 ft. above Lone Pine, CA. If you are interested in more information, contact me off list. Send me a mailing address to receive a brochure. The total cost for this one week workshop -- "room" (tent cabin) and board -- is $395. It's non-profit. The first 15 deposits get the spots. Some have asked whether it's OK to come if you're a beginner. Yes, of course. (A couple have even confessed that they'll be shooting color.) Paul www.PaulRoark.com I previously wrote:

Hello Paul, >The Golden Trout B&W Photo Workshop is happening... Sounds like a terrific opportunity. Without electricity for a week one had better be shooting a film camera or else have lots of batteries for the digicam, or have a rollup solar charger and hope for lots of sun...<grin>. I hope you have a great time. Regards, Clayton Info on black and white digital printing at http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm

The Canon 1DsII batteries will last through that time easily...

Hello Steve, >The Canon 1DsII batteries will last through that time easily... My Canon uses the BP-511a at 1390 mha. I think the idsII uses the same or similar battery, as do many of the Canon DSLRs. It is indeed a good quality battery. However, regardless of which battery is used in a given camera, my experience has shown that how long a battery lasts is directly related to how many pictures one takes and how much the view screen is used. I don't think it is a stretch to suggest that more than one charge would be required during a week of busy shooting during a photo expedition, especially in such an image rich area as the High Sierras. I imagine it would also be very tempting to want to review each day's work. Even if all viewing is done on an off-load storage device, batteries are required for that. I would consider it sheer folly to pay travel expenses and workshop fees for a relatively rare and week-long opportunity like that and only take one or even two batteries for whatever devices are used. Regards, Clayton Info on black and white digital printing at http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm

The Canon 1 series cameras do not use the BP-511a. Instead they use a NiMH battery pack (NP-E3) which lasts much, much longer. It is also about three times the size of the BP-511a. Gary Clayton Jones said the following on 3/8/2006 9:13 AM:

As a reference, I used my 1DsII solidly for a week on safari, including downloading images to a laptop each night, and it barely used 1/3 of the battery. No need for solar powered rechargers....

I consider a tripod almost as important as the camera. So, you'll seldom see me not using one. The problem I'd see with 8x10 is the weight of carrying the equipment. I'm a real fan of traveling light -- more so every year as I get older. Also, dust in changing bags can be a challenge for large format. However, I'd think a relatively portable 4x5 with swings and tilts will probably make a lot of others real jealous of the quality you'll be able to achieve. Go for it. I tend to hike between shooting opportunities and then hang out for a substantial time at the prime areas. The areas are such that people will spread out and pursue their own subjects. We'll have 2 people -- myself and the naturalist (Katherine Courtney) -- who are familiar with the area. When the group starts to spread out, we try to have one person do the rear sweep to be sure the slowest don't get lost. (No lost participants yet!) Paul www.PaulRoark.com

If it came to it, one could walk back out to their car and recharge the batteries there.

Along a boardwalk with vending machines selling Big Gulps and Krispy Kremes along the way? I do agree extra batteries make sense but I am staggered at how long the 1DsII battery lasts.

I can add to that remark. I have a Nikon D2X and bought the Ids Mk II so I could use it with my kit bag of Zeiss lenses going back to 1975. My biggest concern was going back to NiMh batteries as they often tend to lose charge just sitting in the bag. I bought an extrap battery and have never found a need for it. Every one of my shoots showed the Canon battery to be up to the task. Great stuff Woody

Hello Gary, >The Canon 1 series cameras do not use the BP-511a. Instead they use >a NiMH battery pack (NP-E3) which lasts much, much longer. It is >also about three times the size of the BP-511a. Ok, good to know - that explains the longevity Steve reported. What is the mAh rating? Regards, Clayton Info on black and white digital printing at http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm

I think the stock battery is 1600mAh, the replacement I have is 2200mAh. Gary Clayton Jones said the following on 3/8/2006 10:44 PM:

(Please excuse the potentially off-topic "plug.") There are still a few spots left in the Golden Trout photo workshop. See my initial March 3 post at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint/message/74943 for more basic information. Briefly, the group is a non-profit (IRS Code section 501 (1) (3)) group that has conducted workshops for years . (I volunteer as the registrar, with the benefit to me being a free pass for me, the ability to participate in the running of the group, and a stipend of $300 - paid to all "naturalists" and similar volunteers - if the group covers its costs for the year.) In general, the camp has been oriented to natural history, but that is flexible. The charge -- $395 - is the minimum we think will cover our costs and allow the group to continue. This is not a money making venture it's something we do for fun. The camp that is used is 3 mi. past the end of the road at 10,000 feet in the California's southern High Sierra, just south of Mt. Whitney - the highest point in the "lower 48" US at about 14,500 feet. The old log cabins are photo subjects in themselves. It is one of the only structures that has been allowed to continue to exist in the official Wilderness Areas. The ability to use the facility is a real privilege. This year I'm experimenting with the idea that we - this forum and the workshop group - might be able to utilize this venue for a B&W photo workshop, aimed at exchanging ideas, shooting, etc. I'll cover what I do, and hopefully some of the other experts coming will share their knowledge also. How it goes this year will help us see if there is an interesting possibility here for future years. Some of what I'd like to know now is whether I should coordinate packer support for those who want to bring in more equipment than is easily carried. Contact me off list with questions. Thanks. One question of general import that has come up is transportation from LAX to camp for out of state particitants. I'll have a van for up to 5 people. Paul www.PaulRoark.com
