ImagePrint questions

2004-04-08 by himwich@intrex.net

I have finally gotten my Quadtone cartridges with the Roark workflow
to produce a decent print on my 1280 but am still not so nuts about
the result. In particular, the blacks seem to be a little blotchy.
I will go on working with this process to see if there are
improvements in my technique that may yield better prints.

In the meantime, I am wondering about ImagePrint. In particular, I
have some questions.

1. Would ImagePrint help the blotchy black situation or is it more
likely due to printer limitations?

2. Can/does ImagePrint yield good results for both b&w and color with
color cartridges with an Epson 2200.

3. If so, is there any reason to keep both a 1280 and a 2200? I have
both printers now and previously thought that I would use the 1280
for only b&w. If I can use only one (the 2200) that would be great
in terms of making room in my limited space.

OTOH are there workflow considerations that would dictate keeping one
printer for b&w and one for color.

Thanks in advance

HARD TO KNOW WHAT MEAN...I AM VERY HAPPY WITH MY BW PRINTS WITH A
2200 AND IP...SO LONG AS YOU STAY WITH MATTE PAPER (SAME WITH QUADS,
THOUGH)

IMAGE PRINT IS THE BEST SOLUTION I HAVE SEEN FOR BOTH COLOR AND BW ON
A VERY WIDE VARIETY OF PAPERS. IT IS EXCELLENT ON MOST MATTE PAPER
AND QUITE GOOD ON SOME GLOSSY AND SEMI GLOSSY, BUT THE DYE INKS ARE
STILL BEST ON GLOSSY.

NO REASON TO KEEP THE 1280 FOR MATTE PRINTS...IF YOU LIKE GLOSSY, THE
DYES ARE STILL BETTER, SO YOU MIGHT WANT IT FOR COLOR GLOSSY PRINTS?

SWITCHING FROM COLOR TO BW IS TOTALLY A SOFTWARE SETTING...NO
WORKFLOW ISSUE TO SPEAK OF. THE ONLY HARDWARE CHANGE YOU NEED BE
AWARE OF IS THAT YOU SWITCH BLACK CARTS WHEN GOING FROM MATTE PAPER
TO GLOSSY. BUT THIS IS NO HASSLE AND NO INK IS WASTED AND THE 2200
CARTS ARE SELF SEALING...TOTALLY A PLEASURE TO USE.

Hi:

Before you junk the 1280, try a set of the U2 inks. I guess you
could use the U7s, but this way you'd have a great B&W setup and
archival color.

Tom,
Just a quick question about IP. Why do you suppose that so many
folks have problems with IP software?

I'm not bothered so much by the cost as compared to the apparent
hassle it appears to just use it. I've looked into it several times,
but the amount of issues people seem to have is pretty friggin'
ridiculous in my opinion. I'd much rather be out clicking the
shutter... And, I guess I'll just continue to use the simple
approach of printer profiling, or BO, until CB gets it right(or a
competitor)...
Thanks in advance,
Steve

Different Tom, but....

Other than a couple of kown issues, I have never had a problem with IP that I didn't cause. Not to throw stones, but most of the posts about problems with IP appear to be either OS or operator caused. I do not, however, stress IP in the area of layout, etc. I just use it to arrange my images on the sheet, select profiles, and that sort of thing. So, there may be problems in the areas of IP that I don't use.

I can absolutely depend on IP to deliver what I expect on the print. Every time. Color or b&w.

I think mainly installation problems...and installation has been made very simple in IP6.
Otherwise, prpbably, user-induced problems owing to the poor manual...and the manual
has also been vastly improved in IP6. Bruce Fraser, co-author of Real World Photoshop,
writes:

"Workflow with IP is very simple. I make sure IP is set to Apply Embedded profiles, I open
the file in IP, I make sure that IP has the correct output profile set, and I print...Mainly,
once IP is set up, it's much simpler than printing through the OS-level drivers."

Steve,

I'm in the same camp as Tom. Been using IP for over a year, now, and never had a single problem. FWIW.

Been using IP for six months and haven`t had any problems. It`s
probably the easiest
workflow for B&W prints I know of. If your into tone printing, the
new IP 6.0 may be a
relivation. Beatiful sepia and selenium toned prints.

Steve,

We went round and round about this several months ago. While I don't
doubt the experience of others, I don't share it. I have IP 5.5, and
it was always the easiest software in the world to use for me. Keep in
mind that I'm using it in a simple way, as a single-image photo
printer, not on a network or in a production environment.

James
