QTR 2.0 and the gray gamma setting

QTR 2.0 and the gray gamma setting

2004-02-17 by luisvcool

I have a Mac running 10.3.2. I use PS7.01 and calibrated my CRT with MonacoEZcolor. I
also created a profile for my film scanner with Monaco.

After I scan my film (without color management), I open the scanned image in PS7 and I
select my scanner's profile in
"Assign Profile". I then change my image's mode to grayscale. Should I then use the
"Convert to Profile" command and select Gamma 2.2 and then edit my image?

QTR says that one must use a gray gamma setting of 2.2. The gamma setting on Macs is
1.8.
So I should go to "Color Settings" in PS7 and where it says "Gray: Gray Gamma 1.8", change
it to "Gray: Gray Gamma 2.2? Or should I put Gamma 2.2 in the "Convert to Profile"
window in PS7? and leave PS7's Color Setting as is?

I'm confused. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

The gamma setting in Color Settings and the monitor gamma are really two different
things so they are not required to be the same. For the most part the idea is to
pick settings and keep things consistent.

For all my work, I've standardized on Gray Gamma 2.2 and Adobe RGB for color. These
are compatible thus conversions don't cause losses. QTR actually takes the grayscale
numbers directly so profile conversion is not an issue. But all the profiles that I know
of were created with gamma 2.2 working space and that's what I would recommend.

How you calibrate your monitor is independent so if you set it for Mac Gamma 1.8
that's fine.

When you scan film you ought to have the data in 16 bit until at least the major
tonal changes are done and you have it in the Color Setting you want (i.e. gamma 2.2).
