Any strong feelings on what to buy? I'm a bw film photographer scanning to bw tiffs and printing through LR and PS via my Epson 4880. Not a beginner, I've been photographing for many years; I've been in a few shows already, and I have no interest in making this into a business. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Lots of folks recommended Mastering Digital Black and White by Amadou Diallo from 2007, but it is a bit dated now if you are not a novice. Personally, I learned a few things when I read it in 2010, but I really don't use Photoshop anymore. I use Aperture and Nik plugins, especially Silver Efex Pro 2. I would recommend to skip the book and purchase Nik's software. It is truly amazing. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, Lew Schwartz <lew1716@...> wrote:

Does Nik support 16 bit greyscale? Aren't you stuck with converting to 48 bit RGB? I really like Mastering Digital Black and White by Amadou Diallou. (He might even be a member of this list?) --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, Lew Schwartz <lew1716@...> wrote:

I also like Mastering Digital Black and White by Amadou Diallou but it is getting a little old. There is a new book coming out on July 9 by Vincent Versace that I have high hopes will be a good source titled: From Oz to Kansas: Almost Every Black and White Conversion Technique Known to Man. It is listed on Pre-order on Amazon. I just read Welcome to Oz 2.0 by Vincent and it was very detailed and had lots of good techniques and theory defined. Gary Wagner www.garywagner.com

Two more books to consider are: B&W Printing by George DeWolfe. This book talks about printing B&W and what it takes to make a great print. Some of it was rather Zennish and went over my head. I thought reading it helped a lot. Creative Black & White by Harold Davis This is a more technical book and I am glad I bought it. Mike J.

Two that I have found helpful: Mastering Digital Black and White by Amadou Diallo The Art of Black and White Photography by Torsten Andreas Hoffmann --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, Lew Schwartz <lew1716@...> wrote:

Any strong feelings on what to buy? I'm a bw film photographer scanning to bw tiffs and printing through LR and PS via my Epson 4880. Not a beginner, I've been photographing for many years; I've been in a few shows already, and I have no interest in making this into a business. ****************************** I have a few while all are dated "Black and White in PSCS 4 and Lightroom" Alsheimer and Hughes and "Black and white Pipeline" Dillard both are from 2009 I had packed up the enlarger and equipment after my then youngest grandchild had lost interest and had purchased an 8 Megapixel Sony with Ziess lens but was involved in printing color later I wanted to print B&W for archival reasons I was still shooting B&W with a Nikon and having the film lab processed and printed for times the family gathered. I suggest going to Amazon and reading the reviews carefully the most positive are probably from the publisher or authors inner circle but pay attention to the negative ones. While not only a B&W book "Photoshop Elements 10" Mark Galer has a good chapter on this and there is a videoon his web site www.markgaler.com choose the tab for book resources and pick Elements 10 you do not need to purchase the book to watch. About 2010 I started to print Black ink only but was not satisfied then in 2011 I was asked by a county Historical society to see if their collection of school class photos could be saved and reprinted. I had written a paper on the best method to archive thousands of hours of audio recordings of interviews with pioneers and war vetrans. So I was asked how these fragile and damaged photos from prior to 1960 and earlier with some from the 1880's and 90's should be handled. Internet research showed that carbon inks on cotton watercolor paper would meet their requirement of a 100+ year photograph. I have found that there are many Utube videos on just about any subject available some good some not so but by paying attention to the date and the number of times viewed you can see which have been recomended and watched the most. I use this anytime I need directions on using a tool or process with excellent results at finding what I was looking for. So search Utube and keep the URL's of the most useful for return viewing. Some of the new blueray players can do Utube if you need to watch on the big screen. Bill Lewis
