Monaco Profiler now officially dead.

Monaco Profiler now officially dead.

2011-04-12 by dfaprinting

Not sure how many of you received the email, so I'll pass it on...

I just received an email from Xrite announcing that Profiler owners (as well as anyone else) are able to upgrade to i1 Publish for a reduced rate:
http://www.xrite.com/product_overview.aspx?ID=1472

This of course made me mad that the $4000 product I bought is worth the same amount as the $1000 (or less) i1 packages. For those of you with an i1 design LT package, this is a good deal. For the rest of us that spent serious coin it appears to be a grumble and deal with it. I did send them an email saying that this was not the most equitable for those of us with Profiler Platinum, but I doubt they will do anything about it, the bigger Xrite corporation doesn't really care that much about their customers, not like before the merger (at least in my experience).

Yes, I'm in the same situation as you--spent a lot of money on Platinum,
and a Pulse spectro (also gone).
However, from what I've read so far, there doesn't seem to be any
compelling reason to change.

I'm trying to work on a deal, might be trivial like a free Digital SG chart or anything for those of us that bought before they dropped the price to $2000 and then basically ended development. I suggest sending an email to sales and letting them know you are not happy that the upgrade is the same price for Platinum as it is for i1 Pro or Design with CMYK (both about $1500 each). I suggest reminding them of your loyalty when competing products were cheaper and you'd like a little reciprocation now since they've abandoned their previous product so many years ago (2009 was a minor fix for OSX 10.5 and nothing for Windows since 2008 or really 2007).

BTW, the Pulse is still my favorite spectro, still not sure why they haven't made a cordless i1. With current battery technology and wireless technology it could be a cordless but connected device. This might effect my opinion for favorite device.

The upgrade path is 499.00 from Platinum to i1Pro... I just keyed in my dongle number.. I realize that Platinum is more costly then other products but the 499.00 is the same price they have had for years for similar upgrades.. They have not raised it at all. The newer product just happens to be less costly.. Color management is used far more today so it makes sense to me that they are able to offer a product more cost effectively. Back when we bought Platinum color management at that level was far less prevalent. This industry has grown significantly.. actually to much so I think.. You could always continue to run Platinum rather then upgrade.. It's still top of the bar software.

There are interesting license restrictions included in that upgrade to
i1Profiler. Not just a more limiting license on the new software you get
but also a stricter limitation on the old software if you agree to the
new license conditions. With the new software not covering (at) all the
features that are in the old software, users will still use the old
software next to the new profile creator.

Colorsync list and LL colour management forum are hot right now.

Jimbo,

I suggest you read first what you get/loose on features and what you are
allowed to do with the software.

Adobe's policy on Creative Suite upgrades seems to change too and I fear
it isn becoming better either.

i1Profiler is a v1.0 product release, and bringing it to market was apparently arduous enough to face constant delays. Now that users have their hands on it, including me, everyone's hair is on fire over one issue or another. If you have Monaco Platinum, you have one of the best pieces of color management software ever. I upgraded from Gold as I needed CMYK+ profiling ability, but if I had PLatinum, given the info coming out now about the new product, I'd hold off just a bit to see how things work out amongst the user base. Platinum is great, no need to feel you are lacking anything by not upgrading yet. Even though they are both profiling packages, with Monaco and Colorport there are many little things you are used to having at hand the new software may or may not do other than just making profiles...
The upgrade discounts may run out over time, so there's that, but otherwise this is not a decision to jump into lightly.

Thanks for the tip on the issues, I have some questions to ask when I call them. The lack of scanner profiles will be an issue since I do still use film. The lack of CMYK black generation adjustment (not just light, medium, and heavy but real user adjustment) is a real deal killer.

I'll have to see if Profiler will run under the virtual XP that is built into Win7 pro or above, if not I'll have to do something with Virtual Box.

Since it's sort of off topic, I'll probably just update the threads on Luminous Landscape or if requested I can update here too.

A few added things/... I'm looking deeper into this presently and can't seem to get what xrite is up too. In effect this is by no means an upgrade as I see it so far unless I'm missing something..

I realize that imaging is changing but it almost seems that they are promoting the death of a segment of it..
Anyway, regarding scanners.. it's bigger then just film. Many including me still scan originals via drum or flat bed.. additionally their will in the not distant future be no more production on the betterlight back which will increase the importance of scanning.

The Kodak trilinear CCD as used in the Nikon Coolscan 9000 is no longer
produced, a similar or the same Kodak trilinear CCD is used in the
Better Light back.

[Digital BW] Re: Monaco Profiler now officially dead.

2011-04-13 by dfaprinting

No emails back yet. I sent one this morning saying that there is no way that I can allow Xrite to remotely connect to my computer when ever they desire, this was part of the new EULA and is certainly holding things up for me. I also asked about the software and the future plans because it seems that there are too many features left out and I don't want to buy a lesser product now and get shut out of the real replacement. This Publish just seems to have the look and feel of the old i1 software, not the look and feel of Profiler or PMP.

Bright side is that it seems Profiler still works in the XP emulation mode of win7pro or higher, might not get my monitor set, but at least I can still build profiles when I need them. Otherwise it will probably be off to whatever Heidelberg offers, the CMYK from Printopen 4 has always given me good results (the RGB was decent), and the newer version is supposed to be even better. Also time to start looking seriously at Argyll CMS.

Xrite used to be very good to me (which is why I spent the money on their system), but after the Gretag purchase they seem to have taken a much different approach and a few of the old guard can still do small things but they are small.

I'll have to call tomorrow and see if they have answers to my questions.

Last time I checked the Heidelberg system was going for around $2500 (software only) and worked with the popular instruments since they don't make a spectro.
