Ink on Paper Workshop

We still have some spaces available for the Seventh Annual Ink on Paper Workshop in Bishop, California in September. We can't promise you the serenity, reflection, wisdom, and EXERCISE of Paul Roark and Roy Harrington's wonderful Golden Trout Workshop in June, but we can promise you intensive, hands-on, lab oriented B&W printing excellence! www.ovimaging.com.

I also want to announce the official release of the OVI variable tone HTv Hextone inkset, also on the Owens Valley Imaging website.

Thanks,

Tom Mallonee

While I have not participated in Tom Mallonee's workshops, I've seen his excellent work and know a bit about the inks, which appear to use the right inputs. If you go, be sure to have Tom take you to Buttermilk Road, one of the many fine shooting locations in the Owens Valley. This is a shot I took this last year when Tom took Roy and I out there -- http://www.paulroark.com/Buttermilk-Road.html

Paul -
What a beautiful shot - I like Roy's also, but the unusual composition of yours is striking. Thanks for sharing it with us --
Makes me hungry for the Sierras - been too many years on the east coast!

Thank you. That was another multi-focus zone shot, this time with a 35mm and full frame digital. Three shots were taken, using a tripod.

While I've been a big fan of tilt-shift lenses since Canon released it's 35 TS for the FD mount, with lots of shots the tilt doesn't help because the subjects do not line up in a nice plane.

I actually consider my 24 TS to be a wide angle macro. Where it shines is the ability to get really close, while keeping the close subject in the context of the environment (tripod needed, not a light travel outfit).

I recently saw an outstanding example of this concept (not mine, not B&W, and not a TS lens) and what it can do with the aid of Helicon Focus software. See http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4864

That's a pretty neat setup. I have a Nikon PB4 macro bellows, and it works
well, except for wide angle lenses and non macro focus.

I once adapted my Rollei SL66 lenses to a Canon (FD mount). I ran into the same issue that the wide angle didn't do well.

One thing I like in a B&W print is the sense of a third dimension. In a still image one way we can do this is through visual cues. The sense of depth can be triggered by having nice sharp foregrounds and backgrounds.

The High Sierras and the Ownes Valley are rich environments for this subject matter and lend themselves beautifully to B&W photography. Granite and clouds, not to mention flowing steams, look very nice in B&W prints.

And these are made with inks on paper.
