Printer & paper settings

Printer & paper settings

2010-04-16 by Lew Schwartz

I'm sure this is a naive, ignorant question, but I just changed paper in an
Epson 4880 & fortunately stumbled upon the Media Adjustment settings on the
Epson LFP Remote Panel. The software assured me that the changes had been
saved to the printer, so I thought everything was cool when I went into
Lightroom to make a print. Surprise, surprise: the settings for the previous
paper were in the pop-up dialog. I aborted it asap. Hope no damage occurred.

So what went wrong? Could I damage my printer this way?

Thanks.

When you say "Media Adjustment Settings" there is more than one selection when you get to that panel - Custom Paper Setup, Activate Custom Paper, etc. It sounds like you may have done a Custom Paper setup (which will be saved to the printer) but then one must activate the setting.

Might this be your problem?

It very well might be. I'll look into it in the morning.

Thanks, Jon. That, indeed, was the case. What about the word, "custom"? Are
there other paper settings which are not "custom," ie standard or automatic?
Will I have to do a "custom" setup every time I change papers?

I believe the only time you need a custom setup is when the settings on the Epson driver control panel don't give you the results you want. The only reason I knew the answer to your original question is that I had fooled around (as I am wont to do, often to my chagrin) with that part of the LFP controls. I don't use that method to do custom setups. I use the Epson control panel. It gives me many more ways to control my 4880.

Are you printing with some other driver like QTR or some other RIP? If that's the case, then you will need to use the LFP for your custom paper setup. I should qualify that statement - I don't claim to know everything about the software or 4880 hardware.

Hope that helps.
