Cleaning cycles can pull ink from those carts faster than the sponge can release it. So, sometimes after a couple of cleaning cycles the nozzle check on a good cart will suddenly show gaps. It might just be air and need some time to release more ink into the little chamber above the outlet. This may not be what is happening, but I try to avoid too many cleaning cycles.
