I'm not sure a too-dark LC would cause the problem you're having, but it's possible. Try printing an RGB 21-step test strip with only the red curve at its default position, and the green and blue curves horizontal -- i.e., the magenta and yellow inks turned off. On the monitor the RGB image will be cyan. With No Color Adjustment selected in the driver, the ramp will show if the LC is way to dark -- the ramp will be awful. (If you don't know how to make this curve, let me know and I'll send one off list.)
