Hi All, Just got myself a DTXpress III form Thomann, having come from an Acoustic kit I was wondering whether you chaps use tipped sticks as opposed to wood?.....I was wondering about pad 'wear' etc? Thanks all who reply, Bakes

Pad wear is about the same with wood or nylon-tipped sticks. I use my regular SilverFox SF-585 maple sticks on my pads, same sticks I use with my acoustics. I bought and use very "light" (7a's?) Jazz sticks with nylon tips. I try to use high sensitivity so I don't end up with elbow/shoulder problems from pounding the cr@p out of the gum rubber pads. ;) Vern -- Vern Graner CNE/CNA/SSE | "If the network is down, then you're Senior Systems Engineer | obviously incompetent so why are we Texas Information Services | paying you? Of interest is the fact that the first pair I bought a year and a half ago are still just fine- one does not break sticks on these pads. One does not get the gnawed-by-chipmunks effect that comes from metal rims and cymbals. Many folks like a fatter stick- more like the 5As- but in truth you can get volume from the volume control so you don't need to hit as hard.

I first started out using Terry Bozio Bulletheads from Vic Firth. Well, I didn't like the feel very much. Now I use and love my Vic Firth Hickory 5A Dip Sticks. Feel great and have a rubber coating on the bottom half for grip...and seems to me like it also takes some of the shock away, although there isn't much shock from rubber pads. -Zack-

If so, is their "shock absorbtion" claim credible?

im on my acoustic kit now, wating for my dtxpress III but i use the ahead titanium drumsticks 7A, they are awesome on the cymbals but they are heavier than 5A's zildjian wood sticks. i wanted to ask if thats bad for the electrics if someone ever tryed them out.. demetris

Demetris, Light is good on e-drums, but the sticks don't make all of the difference. The major offender is overhitting. Rule of thumb: let the module do the work, or something--either you or your pads--will break. Brute force encounters the law of diminishing returns very quickly on e-drums. If you can keep your head, while others are losing there's, with the titaniums, they should be fine. Ed

Not really. I've tried them out, and they vibrate like mad, to a point where my hands actually hurt holding them. The Ahead sticks do a better job at absorbing vibration, Easton applied their research from their sport equipment to the sticks, and I feel they put more effort into it. Not at all, the Aheads do a great job at absorbing the higher impact shock from pads, I'd say they're close to an ideal stick for electronic players. The rubber core sticks have the wood feel, and do reduce shock, but by little...and the sticks have no weight to them so they don't appeal to me. Ahead Drumsticks are very nice weight, feel, and shock absorbtion...they are made of Poly-somthing, I forget but they are very very strong and very well made. I gave them a try when I tested the DTXpress II at a Lynchburg shop and they worked so good on those pads...I felt very little vinration, if any. -Zack-

I use CarboSticks. They are big in Europe, new over here in the States. They are made from Carbon Fibre.
