Seeking Java Programmer with DTXpress

Seeking Java Programmer with DTXpress

2003-07-10 by ozteevan

A few months ago I started a Java software development project to link
my DTX2 module to my PC using a midi interface. I got it to the stage
that it works for me but I never finished packaging it for
distribution.

At a basic level it provides a graphical version of DTXchange - but it
then shows you the pad assignments and allows you to edit the kits on
screen before sending it back to the kit or saving it to disk. You can
also print out kit assignment which look similar to those in the
manual.

As there are a larger number of DTXpress users out there than DTX2
ones, and the formats of the SysEx messages differ considerably, I was
wondering if someone out there would like to adapt my code for use by
those in this group that are interested.

Any takers for the first Open Source DTX project - DTXport!

Roger

I'm not a programmer of any kind, but I am interested in the program,
why don't you put it in the files section. Everybody can enjoy it then.

I'm an engineer/programmer, although it's been a while since I've done
Java and I don't own a DTXpress (I have a DTXtreme). I do have a
question though...

Is there any documentation on the SysEx data format? How did you find
it? I'd love to find out the DTXtreme format and maybe write some
software for it too. Possibly use your code as a basis for it. Just
kicking some ideas around in my pea sized brain. ;-)

Thanks for the interest Tom but it is not quite that simple. The
version of DTXport I have works with the DTX2 format messages and has
been tested on my sound card with a particular version of the Java
JVM.

I will need some assistance with getting it ready for less technical
users. To be honest with you I think that my coding could do with a
bit of peer review as it was my first Java programming project -
having not programmed professionally for over 10 years.

I have posted the Walk Through document I prepared to the Files
section at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DTXpress/files/DTXport/

Enjoy
Roger

Hi Matt

I worked out the format by "discovery" - a term that may be equated to
reverse engineering but with a slightly different legal slant ;-)

To understand the format you need an understanding of what is going to
be in the file ie How many pads, layers, notes etc. If I had a
description of a standard kit and a copy of the SYX file I could
probably make a stab at breaking it down for you.

I would be very happy if you used DTXport as a framework for the
DTXtreme. Ideally the one app should work for all DTX modules.

I'm interested. I work mostly in Java, although the stuff I do is
primarily XML-related. I have A DTXpress II kit hooked up to my
computer running Cubase.

My original training was a B.Sc. in computer science. I was a software
developer for many years, then got a law degree. In the past three years
I have moved back to software (didn't like practicing law). So I have
written lots of Java stuff, but not in an environment that has provided
me with any peer review either. But I'm interested in participating.
