A SOLUTION.

A SOLUTION.

2003-06-13 by Russell

In the wake of this spam situation I have an idea which I would like
some feedback on,I am a super moderator on a website called digi-
darkroom.com,it is for digital photography, but with a little bit of
ear bending,if you guys want,we could move over to there. It would
help the group in a big way.

It is a good site and the software being used is vbulletin,so there
is no POP-UPS and NO ADVERTISMENTS,and its a very friendly
atmosphere.

hmmm ok, so am I invisible or something? as I said a little bit ago...

AGAIN.... I humbly offer the following solution:

I will host the group list.

I have a domain and a forum already running (for about 6 months now!).

I set up others to moderate and/or control the site (just vote on it?).

Here is the site location:

http://www.dtxpressions.com

And her is the board I have setup:

http://www.dtxpressions.com/messages.htm

I own the ISP this stire is hosted on and I would be happy to setup
whatever system people here prefer.. Shall we finally discuss this
seriously? :)

No, your not invisible. I had this groups posts automatically forward
to my work email address so that I could monitor it without having to
logon to the website.

I too, had to shut this off when the anti-spam/porn filters started
kicking in on the exchange server. (I still recieved the email, but a
copy was also forwarded to the companys system administrator.)

Unfortunitly, once this type of spam starts, it usually kills a
group.

If this group moves, please let me know, because I throughly enjoy
the company.

Hey Vern old pal,

You're not invisible. It's just not possible for one or two or three
people to determine the viability of any particular plan for the
whole group. Your offer is generous, and it does speak to certain
disadvantages of the Yahoo site, but there is a little thing called
inertia. Inertia isn't always a bad thing; sometimes it's just a
thing. The group is here now; it functions reasonably well; it's
big; it's familiar; it's pretty secure; it doesn't require much
thought to use; and it has an established, congenial atmosphere.
Mobilizing 700 people to change their habits--and not all habits are
created equal--is not a simple task, no matter how obvious the
benefits of a change may appear to someone in the abstract.

The advertising, the irrelevant posts, and the cheap dates are
relatively minor annoyances at this stage of the game, as is the
lack of control over files etc. They, however, could eventually
escalate and upset the comfort balance, as a few people have warned.
But if Chris Thackston emerges and appoints moderators, a lot of the
potential trouble will dissipate.

I was a little reluctant to post on this subject in this manner,
because I didn't want to appear opposed to your proposal (or anyone
else's), because I'm not. I have my concerns about the effects of
moving, but, in the end, that's just me. Apart from anything that I
may think, there is this thing called inertia, and we have to reckon
with it.

I think it's time to post a POLL to see if there is
interest in moving, at least we would know once and
for all if we should explore this issue more.

I asked this previously but never saw an answer...

Will your forum software allow email delivery of post and email
posting?

That would be a key for me. I belong to dozens of user groups now and
if I had to surf to browse/post messages it would take me hours. Web
only forums are fine for occasional use (like tech support) but for a
discussion group they are cumbersome.

I certainly appreciate your efforts either way.

The PHPBB I have up there now does email notification when a thread is
updated, and I *think* it has a digest option, but I don't know if it has
a email echo for all posts. I can check. However, if it does not, and
someone knows of a forum software they like that does, let me know and I
can load it up for testing.... :)

Thanx! :) I have to admit, I wasn't trying to sound petulant in the post
I placed earlier (though it might have come across that way), but I was
feeling a bit invisible since there was such an outcry about the pr0n
post that made it to the list and no one seemed to remember that I had
*already* spent a considerable amount of time to create an alternative to
Yahoo. IF we were on it, we could appoint moderators, post pictures w/o
the artificial yahoo limits and add whatever new features we would like
since I would load whatever the board wants onto one of our commercial
servers.

Never intended to ruffle anyones feathers... :(

Re: [DTXpress] Re: A SOLUTION.

2003-06-13 by Matt Pobursky

Good thoughts Ed.

I feel the same way for the most part, but a private site certainly has
some long term benefits. If we could get the same forum features as the
Yahoo group (plus the additional benefits of a private site), I think
the group would be better served in the future. I'm also concerned that
Yahoo might change their policies in the future (they've done it once
already in the past year).

Vern's forum software is better than Yahoo's and we'd obviously have
more control over membership and content. If we can get email message
delivery/posting then the only real change any group members will have
to make is register on the new site and change the mail address they
send posts to.

As for the inertia aspect, we could always link from the Yahoo site to
Vern's site as part of the welcome message (a previous Yahoo group I
was a member of did this and it worked well).

Just some thoughts on the subject. I'll go wherever the group goes...

Few web-based BBS and forum systems allow this. Most (including
phpBBS) will notify of new posts to subscribed topics by mail, but
generally only the "professional" (read $$$$$) versions of a very
few will allow participation by mail.

An alternative way to do it might be to turn it on its head: use a
listserver to host a mailing list, then stick one of the free web
gateways on top to give a web browsable interface.

I share Ed's concerns about inertia, though I think a
suitable "welcome" message and a few thick-skinned individuals
dropping in from time to time could redirect the stragglers or
newbies to whichever new home is chosen, if that comes to pass.

It's a crying shame that more text has crossed the aether in the
last few days on this topic than on the one we came here for [sigh].
T'was ever thus.

         Guys and Gals

I have spoken to the Admin on our site
www.Digi-Darkroom.com and it would not be a problem moving over
there.I really dont mind if we all move to Verns site,I`m only
trying to help out guys.
The only downside of moving to Digital-Darkroom is that there
no option to receive posts by e-mail,only if you make a post in the
first place then an e-mail will be sent to you stating that someone
has repied to your post, apart from that its a very, very impressive
site.
