For me, the hardest, and somewhat most important, is to be able to let each limb, work without interferance when another limb is working.. Ehh.. You know what I mean? Practice some simple stuff, and try putting a few hard ones in here and there. Like; 1/8ths on the hihat, strict and with no pauses or shuffles, 1/2ths on the snare and Bassdrum, but with a few 1/3th notes, or other odd/hard stuff. When You can play the hard stuff, without letting the strictness of the hihat go, You've come a long way! To play with others, it's also important, that You can be very strict in overall, since the others are leaning on You, and the bass player. Try listening to the bass player and work with his flicks. For starters anyway. I recommend You to take some classes! A teacher can make You realise stuff, that You might have later, but MUCH sooner. The grip on the drum-stics, notereading, etc. It's really not that expensive, and the dough is VERY well spend! -Musicians are worth supporting, while I guess You could do without those BigMacs/Whoppers for a while, yehh? =) Calla..

Hello lee,
I have also just bought a dtxpress kit. I did play
years ago, and always wanted to get back into it. One
of the first things I bought was the buddy rich snare
drum rudiments book, which I had when I originally
started playing. This is very good for showing you how
to read music, stick gripping and all the rudiments.
As for playing on the kit, it may be worth playing
along with fairly simple beats like acdc to start off
with, and make sure you use the groove check facility.
I thought I was bang on time until I played with the
groove check (what an eye opener). It is an excellent
function. I also use it with rudiments, my paradiddles
and double stroke playing were wildly out of time, but
this really focuses your mind.
Have fun,
Daz

I was right where you are about two months ago. Slowly I am moving forward :) I grabbed a dvd called "getting started on drums" with Tommy Igoe. It had me playing some basic beats and fills within hours. I am actually still working primarily on those beats and improvising a bit when the mood strikes me :) Keep in mind that I am EXTREMELY new to drumming and others in the group may negate my advice regarding this dvd. I did find it helpfull though. I think it cost me about 25 bucks at amazon. --- In DTXpress@yahoogroups.com, "lee_tiso" <lee_t@h...> wrote: > i have just recieved my DTXpress II . i have never played the drums > before but have always wanted to learn. has anyone any suggestions?

Hey, Lee. I felt I had to add my comments to the others who have replied to your inquiry. I think it's really important to get a professional drum teacher to start you off. I went back to my original teacher after 20 years because I couldn't work out why I found it impossible to pick up speed around the kit, and why my wrists hurt so much. It turned out I was holding the sticks the wrong way. I had completely forgotten the correct technique. And now that I've got it, it's made playing (and practising) a lot easier and more fruitful. --- In DTXpress@yahoogroups.com, "lee_tiso" <lee_t@h...> wrote:
