Help With HiHat Settings...What Am I Doing Wrong???

Help With HiHat Settings...What Am I Doing Wrong???

2003-01-28 by jadiebooshkie <jadiebooshkie@yahoo.com>

I am having LOTS of trouble getting my HH to deliver that "shoop"
sound and the closed HH sound. If I do a multiple lick fast between
the snare and HH,The HH delivers only a few of the notes, and the
rest are muted, if I whack at the rim of the HH to get the "shoop"
sound (partially open then closed HH sound), I get a dead pad...is
my HH pad dying? Anyway, here are the settings I have for my HH (It
is 2 layered)...perhaps someone could help me with the settings...I
want HH response EVERYTIME I hit the pad-whether partially opened or
closed...ANY HELP will be immensely appreciated. Here are
settings: V2 settings:
KIT IN=FootClV=1..... FootClV=2
H-009-HvyClse*....... H/020 LiteClose
Vol-126 Pan-C........ Vol-110Pan-C
Tune-0 F-0.......... TuneC=0 F=0 Layer Bal=0
LayerBal=---.........       Decay+11  Fc=+3  Fade=0  Rev Send=25
Decay=+13  Fc=0...(what does Fc do?)
Note#44(G#1)...what's this mean and do?
Ch=10  GateT=0.35....what's this?
Fade=0  Rev send=25  AltG=1  Key=semi(same for V2) **hold mode, key
off function are off, disable and normal, respectively for V1 and V2

What does "Copy To" mean and do?...Thanks for letting me vent my
frustration....Jade

FC, or frequency cutoff, is a measure of how bright you want the
sound to be; the higher the brighter. The Note # is the midi note
number assigned to a particular input (forget about it until you
start trying to send midi notes to an external device--like the
midiKITI). The "Copy to" function allows you to transfer the
settings from one input to another. It's irrelevant for now.

The drop-outs on the hi hat are probably due to your trigger
settings being too high--most likely input 8's (hit hat) specific
rejection of input 2 (snare). If the snare is dropping out, just
reverse the direction. The gain for the snare or hh might also come
into play; don't go too high for now. (I'm guessing that your min.
vel. isn't at fault because you don't seem to indicate that the
difficulties come with light hits.) Stay with the pad gain default
until you lick the drop-out problem. Check the January posts about
snare/hh interaction, which go into more detail about the rejection
parameters.

As for the shoop, you can get it. First, you shouldn't expect
hitting the rim of a rubber pad to deliver the same result as
hitting the rim of an acoustic hi hat cymbal. Whatever you do on the
gum rubber HH pad, do it toward the center. Next, you have to
experiment with HH sensitivity in the Voice menu and HH offset in
the Utility menu to get the HH controller to behave to your liking.
There's also a small knob at the head of your controller pedal that
can be adjusted with a drum key for further refinement. If I
remember correctly (and I may not), my HH Offs was at 0 and my
sensitivity at 20.

Thanks, Ed...I have been messin' with the settings, and will try

Tom has his own timetable. We pursued it together--at a distance--
until there was nothing left for me to do, and Tom had to get to the
nitty gritty himself. Two weekends ago he was set to do measurements
on an HH80, which was the last part of the procurement stage. I'm
not sure how much time it will take him to construct a single
controller that will toggle between Roland and Yamaha. He led me to
believe that it wouldn't be too long, but we'll see. If I don't get
an update in a couple of weeks, I'll check with him. Meanwhile my
Visu-lite hi hat cymbals are waiting patiently on the stand for the
finishing touch.

I am assuming the visulite HHs will mount on a "normal" HH stand...
how is the HH80 involved? I don't have the HH80...wish Idid, but
can't see wasting hard earned cash for something I will replace
shortly, I will definitely get the visulites!...as I said
before...ain't nothin' like playin on a real HH...thanks for all
your help, Ed, you have helped out alot of us newbies, and we
appreciate it!...Jade

Re: Help With HiHat Settings...What Am I Doing Wrong???

2003-01-29 by liberatusvirus <liberatusvirus@yahoo.com>

I'm glad to help. I got a lot of help when I started as well. The
Visu-lites mount on the HH stand of your choice (though I've heard
that the DW swivel-leg model doesn't accommodate it so easily). The
top cymbal attaches to input 8 just like the pad you have now. The
cable goes through a hole in the two cymbals and out the bottom into
the module. The controller is basically the foot pedal of your hi
hat stand attached to an electronic assembly, not unlike a very
glorified dimmer switch, that follows the motion of the pedal,
giving you the full range of sound between closed and open. A cable
runs from the assembly to the controller input of the module. The hi
hat cymbals behave normally while the foot pedal and electronic
device do their job. With proper setting, the simulation is perfect.
One caveat: The top Visu-lite cymbal is noiser than what you have
now. You may want to dampen it with more than Tom's thin rubber
cover on the playing part of its surface.
