Hey, if anyone's still around, I'm in desperate need of help. All I want is to upload all these custom user kits to my DTxpress I. I have DTXchange and a midi-usb cable. I followed his instructions exactly, I think, but every time i try to send the kit, but my CPU and the DTXpress freezes.

The MIDI in & out connections can be confusing (to me anyway) so they may be connected incorrectly. MIDI IN connects to MIDI OUT & vice versa. You didn't say which module you have, but on the DTXpress I/II/III there is a switch on the back "host select". Make sure it is switched to MIDI. Try a bulk dump from the DTXpress first. Click on "receive" in DTXchange and then do a bulk dump from the DTXpress & see if that works. There a various free MIDI monitor programs around which will show the data being sent and received. If you use one of those you can check your midi is working and connected correctly by simply hitting pads, without using DTXchange. Keith.

I've searched everywhere I can on the internet, so I've done most of the troubleshooting. I've got the leads hooked up right, the switch set to MIDI. I haven't tried a bulk dump though. Is that under utilities>bulk dump, then just hit enter on the module? And what other programs can I use to monitor the midi? I'd like to check if my cable is working, it's just a generic one. DTXpress original by the way. thanks for the help.

OK, try http://obds.free.fr/midimon/ for a midi monitor. You can try it for free. There are many others - I just searched on google & picked the first one.
Using that, you should be able to check the midi is working - if you hit a pad, you should see the note information and pad velocity displayed.
With my cheapo USB-MIDI interface I have to plug the cable marked out into the DTXpress input & vice versa. The input LED flashes regularly even when nothing is happening (this may mean that the midi clock has been detected, I am not sure).
Anyway, if you cannot get it to receive midi notes then you will not get DTXchange to work.
Assuming you can receive midi notes, you need to set up DTXchange. Select the midi setup option in DTXchange and make sure the correct interface is selected for both input & output. In my case there is only one choice for "input" but three choices for output, only one of which is correct ("USB Audio Device" in my case).
Then try receiving. Select receive on DTXchange and it should tell you to do a "bulk dump" on the DTXpress. Press the UTIL button on the DTXpress until you see the MIDI settings. Select just one kit (UT Midi bulk dump FMT=OneDrumKit) and press enter. That should send the data to the computer pretty quickly, which will be confirmed on DTXchange.
Let me know how far you get. I could then note the settings on my DTXpress that may help, depending on where you get to. I am not a midi expert, but I can usually get mine to work fine, once I have plugged the cables in the correct holes.

I downloaded that midi monitor and i'm still getting nothing. all I got was the program constantly freezing and having to be shut down, just like the dtxchange. even though that didn't work, i tried the bulkdump, nothing showed up on my computer. maybe it's my cable? there's three LED's on my device, red, orange, and green. Red is power i believe. When I connect the device to my cpu, the red turns on. When I plug it into the DTXpress, the orange comes on. The green never does, though i have seen it flicker before.2010-01-08 by keith1200rs
It is difficult to know if your MIDI cable is faulty or if the drivers aren't loaded correctly without something else to check it on. I bought a cheap USB-MIDI interface from EvilBay and it works fine (my laptop doesn't have MIDI). I suggest you just use the MIDI monitor software and try to get some data out of the DTXpress when hitting pads first. Then use DTXchange. I have listed my DTXpress settings below: UT MIDI RECEIVE 10PC=on 10=on PC=on SySEx=on UT MIDI PC TABLE No=1 kit 40 UT MIDI SETUP MIDI Mode=native DevNo=Alloc L=on Merge Output=off DumpInterval=100 Send HH Ctrl=on Host Thru Port=1 Obviously some of those will not matter but it should give you a starting point. Assuming you try these settings and still cannot get it to work with the connectors either way round I would start to suspect the computer/drivers/cable. Do you have a second computer you could try? Keith.

When I searched online, everyone having trouble with this cable said they would get a it to say (device not functioning properly) under device management. Mine say's it's working properly, but regardless, I tried two other drivers that was supposed to fix the problem, but still with no luck. I also tried my other computer which has XP rather than Vista. Same problems. I don't have time to check now, but those settings look like what I have... I'll double check tonight. I used the midi monitoring program with no luck as well... Maybe I'll try to find something else that could have midi capabilities.

It sounds like your computer MIDI interface is the problem. My interface is like this: http://tinyurl.com/ycewv57 Works fine. I use XP. Keith.

Tried it on XP even though the cable says it works with Vista. Switched around the midi ports in case they were labeled wrong. Uninstalled the interface and re-installed it. It has to be a busted cable... it shouldn't be this difficult. I contacted the ebay seller and they told me they'll send out a new one asap. Didn't even say anything about me sending back mine... Hopefully this next one will fix my problems. If not, I haven't a clue what the problem could be. I don't know if there could possibly anything relevant here... but I keep getting this error when trying to start up midi monitor. I think I noticed a similar system32 error when trying to install another driver or program... : http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/1444/capturegv.jpg

It sounds like the program must have found a midi input device though, because if I leave mine unplugged I get an error message "No Midi device found - this application can't be start". The WINMM174.SYS file seems to be one created by the midi monitor and when I open it it contains the following "LaunchCount=29" - that's all. So it is simply a counter to see how many times you have used it (presumably before the demo period expires). Keith.

I guess i'll just have to wait for my new cable to come in and hopefully that'll fix my problem. For now i tried out the settings someone posted under the database section... that gave my symbols a bit more life at least.

Yeah, I've never used midi before now. I suppose it's possible that for one reason or another you could be correct... but no, I've never used or tried using a MIDI device before now. --- In DTXpress@yahoogroups.com, Jono W <bthreadbare@...> wrote:

Anyone think of anything yet that I might be able to try? Maybe some type of settings within windows? This is killing me... --- In DTXpress@yahoogroups.com, "CJ" <cgibsong002@...> wrote:

But then you have tried two midi interfaces now with the same effect which I would have thought would have eliminated the hardware! You could try the DTXperience site http://www.dtxperience.com/index.php although it depends on if it is really DTXpress problem. If it is a general MIDI problem you might do better at a MIDI forum e.g. http://www.midiworld.com/forum/ or maybe one of the Harmony forums - they have a lot of members http://acapella.harmony-central.com/index.php Keith.
