Mixer

2006-08-16 by TERRY THOMAS

Hi there, I am a new dtxpress owner and have a problem that is
probably hilariously simple for you learned xpressers.
I want to play along with cds thru my headphones. I connected up the
cd player as per the instructions but the volume is so low as to be
ridiculous. I currently wear some inner ear phones and bigger phones
on top which is hardly ideal.
A guitarist friend has suggested that a basic sound mixer would be the
ideal solution ie plug drums and cd into the mixer and use one pair of
headphones.I have seen what appear to be simple mixers on ebay but I
would appreciate any advice anyone might have reference the problem
and how to connect a mixer if that is the answer.
Regards Terry

Yep, your friend is right. The nice thing is, with the CD player and the
drums plugged into their own channels, you can adjust the volume
independently of each other. What you would do is plug the drums into one
one stereo channel input or two mono channel inputs and run the CD player
into another stereo input. Run your headphones into the phone jack and be
sure to have your output to that. That way, if you have the controls, you
could adjust the frequency response on each channel without affecting the
others.

I have to do that, as I am profoundly deaf and need to keep the drum set
sounds out. I have a pair of hearing aids that are capable of Direct Audio
Input mode via wire attachments that makes me hard wired into my sound board.
That way, I can hear everyone else in the band directly through the sound
board and not worry about the room acoustics, provided I know what the room
will do to my playing adjustments.

I experienced the same problem with my dtx and volume issues. I purchased a Behringer mixer for around $50 and my problem quickly went away. I plugged both the module and the CD player into the mixer and it mixed things up beautifully. I was using two modules at the time, so it helped me get a good balance between the two units.

I'd like to second the recommendation for a Behringer mixer (mine is
the UB1002)... I picked mine up shortly after getting the DTXpress,
and I love it! A hint: go for a few more channels than you think you
would need - you will always find a need for more than you originally
thought!

Gee,
I would have thought the answer would be:
- cd goes to mix-in channel. that channel has its own volume control on it.
In addition,
your cd player has a volume control.
- there's a master volume on the DTX that controls the drums and the cd
volume.

Between the cd volume, the mix in volume, and the master volume, you should
be able
to get the mixed volume where you want it. I can on my dtexpress I.

I do have to tweak the cd volume (ususally turn it pretty high) and turn up
the mix in volume,
and turn down the master volume to get the right mix. But at least I didn't
have to buy
an external mixer.

Cheers,
Andy
