DTXtreme IIS or Roland TD12

DTXtreme IIS or Roland TD12

2006-08-16 by znfusion

Hi All,
Sorry to have to bring this up but I currently have a DTXpress 1
and want to upgrade. I've had a quick play on the DTXtreme II and it
seemed to sound the same as my DTXpress 1 so I then decided to look
at the Roland kits and I'm impressed with the TD12 the way it works.
More importantly the snare sound seem more realistic and they have
more dynamics than the Yamaha snare sounds.
However, what I need to know is does the DTXtreme II have any snares
drum sounds with the snare buzz switched off? I currently have to
assign a jazz tom to my snare pad to get this kind of sound. I know
that with the TD12 you can switch the snare buzz on and off and also
add dampers etc. Does the DTXtreme have this capability?

I do like the TD12 but the DTXtreme II would be more beneficial to me
as I can add my existing pads to it and only use one module and pay
less but if the snares are crap then I'll be in the same situation as
I am now but with more pads.

Can anyone give me a good rundown on the pros and cons of these kits?

Thanks

You might want to try the DTXtreme group:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/DTXtreme/

The DTXtreme pads have a control know (as well as a volume adjustment)
and I think that is for making adjustments like snares, but I cannot
be sure. extract from the manual:

When using a TP120SD or TP100 pad for the snare drum or
tom (connected to trigger inputs 1 to 6), you can use the pad
controller to adjust the drum tone. Specify a voice parameter
(page 48) adjusted by the pad controller. Select a value that
ends with an “R” letter, for simultaneous control for both pad
and rim 1 voices.
❏ Settings: off (no effect), pitch (R) (Tuning), volume (R), voice
(R), pan (R), layer (R), filter (R), Q (R), attack (R),
decay (R), decay R+ (see note), wave 1 (Layer 1 voice)*,
wave 2*, XSfilter*, XSdecay*, balance*
* Controllable when Type=XtrSnr is selected in voice settings.
nThe decay+R value can continuously adjust the voice decay rate and
switch to another specific voice (strainer-off tone for the snare
drum, for example) at a minimum setting.
nYou can select any parameter here, but actual effect by the pad
controller depends on the drum voice selected in the voice settings.

Yes, the DTXTREMEIIS has at least seven (7) stereo samples of snares with
the snares OFF. Plus 3 additional mono samples of snares with the snares off
[pg 15 of DATA LIST, OtrSnr category, #'s 48-64].

You will probably want to add the Yamaha TP120SD pad as your new snare
pad. It has a control knob on it that allows you to adjust the virtual snare
tension, and when you dial it all the way down it gradually "loosens" the
snares and then switches to play one of the "SnrOff" samples. This lets you
switch it up live much the way you do with a real snare. When you want
snares on again, dial the control knob up again and there they are.

The TP120SD sets up on a real snare stand, and can be positioned better
than a snare pad on the rack. It also has 3 zones, to allow head hits, rim shots
and cross stick at once.

Good luck,

Tom
