Yep, your friend is right. The nice thing is, with the CD player and the drums plugged into their own channels, you can adjust the volume independently of each other. What you would do is plug the drums into one one stereo channel input or two mono channel inputs and run the CD player into another stereo input. Run your headphones into the phone jack and be sure to have your output to that. That way, if you have the controls, you could adjust the frequency response on each channel without affecting the others. I have to do that, as I am profoundly deaf and need to keep the drum set sounds out. I have a pair of hearing aids that are capable of Direct Audio Input mode via wire attachments that makes me hard wired into my sound board.
