Roland Octopad

2005-02-01 by smcevenue

Hi,

It's been a mighty long time since my last post but I am monitoring
the Group regularly. I'll soon have to get with it and upgrade to
an Extreme kit.

For now, my attention is the Roland Octopad and units like it. What
can I learn about its compatibility with DTXpress II and about the
best way to link it. Right now I am running the snare, 4 toms, Hi-
Hat, bass and three cymbals.

Thanks for whatever you have to offer.

Sean

Sean,

Any MIDI device without sounds of its own connected to the DTXpress
will require you to make at least one MIDI connection and to assign
note numbers to specific Yamaha voices in the Utility Mode and enter
those numbers into the device as appropriate for each separate pad.
Compatibility isn't an issue so far as MIDI is concerned, and the
Octapad doesn't take up any inputs. Although the DTXpress module
doesn't have a boatload of free MIDI numbers for external access, you
should be able to squeeze out 8 of them.

I've used a small MIDI drum pad to provide additional inputs to the
DTXpressII. Similar to this one:

There are a surprising number of "extra" sounds in each of the kits I've
experimented with. Try hooking a MIDI keyboard to the MIDI in on the
DTXpress and setting it to send on Channel 10. Then strike keys and hear
how many different sounds are there. :)

Ed and Vern,

Thanks very much for your replies. As usual, right on the money and
then some.
