As an alternative to dedicating the pad to a one-time use sound, you could use the velocity cross-fade to set a very high cross-over point with the "special" sound playable when you smack the cr@p out of the cymbal during the song. :) This leaves you with a "regular" set and all your pads until the moment when u need the "special" sound. This might also be somthing you could try with one of the zones on your snare. If you don't use the rim-shot very often you could assign it to the "special" sound. The reason I'm suggesting this is that I find the stock number of pads to be a bit limiting when you're trying to play regular patterns and fills and it might be a bit contstraining to you to "lose" a pad to a sinlge sound that might only get played once or twice a during the song....
