Pics of my progress

2008-02-02 by thealisonproject

Hi Everyone

All my parts arrived so I decided to throw a few pics as the building
goes forward.

Note: this was my first FPE panel so I had to put a color in there. I
didn't think about it until afterwords but no disrespect to Dave Brown
for removing ModularSynthesis from the panel which he designed, he
will be represented on the LCD.

You have LEDs in the panel. How did you mount them? I used a small
breadboard and then silicon RTV to the panel. Just curious.

The panel is public so no issue there. As to the LCD, I put a command
in there to change the power up message and store it in eeprom so you
can customize that as well. Once the system is all together and
programmed, the power up message is generally never seen since your
program more than likely displays something anyway.

I secured the LEDs in place with a little epoxy...

I finished the board last night and now moving onto finishing the
remainder of the wiring.

I have one question regarding the wiring of the switches, for the
Start / Stop / AUX - ON-OFF-(ON)Toggles the top and bottom tabs of the
switches and connected to together so we have a ON and mom ON for
those functions?

Thanks
Chris

Yes. Both sides of the switch are wired in parallel.

On some programs, like my sequencer, I wanted momentary switches for
selecting data or menu items. On other programs, I wanted non-
momentary switches so I could use them as a mode. I decided when I
built my CVS I would just incorporate both modes by using a On-Off-
(On) switch.

Thanks Dave, I finished it tonight (minus the midi - optocoupler
backordered).

Just having fun fooling around with some of your programs,,,, it's
already a late night and I don't see myself going to sleep anytime
soon....

Thanks to everyone involved in this project. ughh I think I want more.

Neat. Which programs?

The joystick program uses the display in a bar graph mode. That's
kind of interesting. I generally just use the supersequencer program
in the CVS but I also really like the divider and pseudo-sequencer.

Also try the CV2Midi program. It uses MIDI out so you don't need the
optocoupler. CV control of program change, especially at a per note
basis, makes for some really interesting effects.

When you get your opto-coupler, try the MIDI transformer program. It
uses the pitchbend to reverse your keyboard from end to end. It
really transforms your playing.

Did you by any chance order the opto from Mouser? Mine was on
backorder for 2+ months but I just got them last week.

As people have photos I would suggest to either add them in the photo
section or post links in the link sections.

Yes I ordered the opto from Mouser, it shipped last week so I should
hopefully see it next week. I am in Canada and Mouser orders usually
take a few weeks to arrive.

I will check out the CV2Midi soon but first I have to wire up the Midi
part for the module, I just left that out for now because I did not
have the optocoupler.

I fooled around with your PSIM and CVS joystick programs, also the
Multi Phase LFO. I have a ton of homework I need to finish and as soon
as I finish I will be running back to play with this module.

Thanks again
Chris

Chris, I just have to say... you suck!
I'm still feeling good about actually soldering those DACs, and you're
already DONE?!?!

I feel completely emasculated. Where's my feather boa?

: )
Great work!

I just had midterms and now have this week off so I had a little time
with my CVS. My opto showed up and I finished installing the Midi
section althou all I have done with it is test it is working correctly...

I have been fooling around with Dave Brown's sequencer program a fair
bit and am amazed how much fun I am having with the Staircase output.
Here are a few samples of my screwing around with some basic patches.

http://www.thealisonproject.com/funseq.mp3
vco 1 - motm 440 vcf (vco controlled by sequencer)
vco 2 - miniwave - ms20 vcf (vco controlled by inverted out from
sequencer, miniwave controlled by staircase from sequencer)

http://www.thealisonproject.com/funseq2.mp3
basically same as above but one oscillator
only tweaking is changing the rom on the miniwave

Re: Pics of my progress + sounds

I assume the SuperSequencer program. I forgot I put that staircase
output in there. That's just the step number normalized to 5 volts
out. Step1=0 volts. StepN=5 volts. There's also an inverted
staircase output.

Try using the programmable gates to change the bank or wave inputs on
the MiniWave. Run them through an attenuator to set the level. It
will switch between wave/bank0 and some other wave/bank depending
upon the attenuator setting.

Just plug the MIDI output to another synth. Program each step to a
different instrument (e.g. program change). Run that in parallel with
your other VCOs.

Use the programmable gates to drive the clock FM. You can create a
swing 'feel' to your sequence. I like to set the programmable gates
to every other step ("AA" or "55"). Or I'll set the gate for the
second half of the sequence to speed up that portion.
