LCD_Support Build Guide

LCD_Support Build Guide

2007-09-06 by djbrow54

I thought that a Build Guide for the LCD_Support PCB might be in order
based upon some recent emails. I thought about authoring one but
wanted a mechanism for anyone to be able to add their tips. Since a
single source document makes that difficult, I thought to try
a FAQ database. I've created one that hopefully anyone can add to and
edit. I've started it with 11 tips.

Please, anyone that has or is building a LCD_Support PCB, add your
learnings to this database.

Also, let me know of any database issues. I think I have it setup
correctly.

If this works, I may migrate my CVS Build Guide document to a similar
database.

Maybe the biggest problem is that no "Source code" is available for
the LCD_support PCB?

Hi Dave
i just found the LCD FAQ database in the -database- section of the
group...what a concept huh!?
sorry for the unnecessary query

I went ahead and uploaded my latest CVS PCB build guide as well. I
hope the people building boards will add their tips and learnings to
this database.

Samppa,

Are you talking about the LCD Support PCB schematics and gerbers, or the
Atmel AVR code? In either case, why is the lack of those a problem?

Basicly the schematics are already there in the overlay picture, for
the source code - yes.

It's pretty elemental part of PSIM-1/CVS systems as Dave has used it a
lot (and we know he's the main contributor of the programs)

The rationale is still the same as with main CVS - keeping the system open.

Just to clarify, the LCD Support PCB is not "open source", nor has it ever
been advertised as such. We provide enough information and materials to
make it work with the CVS, nothing more is implied.

Re: LCD_Support Build Guide

Hi All
My impression is that the zeitgeist of the CVS is a pool of shared
subroutines and applications that run on a 'pretty-standardized'
platform. Participation in this open-source principle is entirely
voluntary of course***.
But the LCD subassembly is an accessory that is distinctly separate
from the CVS platform(s). i just don't see it as a component of the
CVS. In the first place, a CVS can make plenty of music, very
effectively, without the LCD, and in that sense alone, i don't see any
incongruity with even 'the spirit of the law' in Mr. Loffink reserving
the driver code for an accessory as private.
In the second place, the LCD is a standalone device and the CVS is
only one of it's possible applications. Some of those applications may
not espouse open-source principles.
Lastly, having done some device-specific drivers in the past, and
speaking strictly for myself, i'm ECSTATIC that i'll never have to
look at the driver code for that display. i'm overjoyed that some
other poor lamb ascended that altar in my stead.
;'>
i'm VERY content to remain a mere user in that realm.
Mr. Loffink has provided access to routines that will allow me to have
all the two-line text fun that i can conceive for my CVS adventures.
From my perspective i just don't see an issue.

Incidentally, i just built an LCD, it's a fairly easy build and it
works VERY well.

*** There's no rule that says someone couldn't -try- to develop CVS
applications on a commercial basis. But i daresay they'd better have
another source of revenue at the ready. Given the BasicAtom's
application environment, these apps would be pretty hard to protect.
(they couldn't be potted in epoxy, for instance)
