Display Help

Display Help

2006-03-25 by djbrow54

My display spec has a set of pre-programmed default fonts for the
eight user defined characters. What do people want? My treble clef
really sux. Can someone design a better one or have a better
suggestion for these eight characters?

Do people want a blank screen on power up or a default message? I put
messages on both of my previous designs. What should it display?

Dave

IMHO, it should say:
"CVS LCD display"
"by Dave Brown"

you should get a curtain call for all your work.... god knows there
ain't no money in it!

i tried hard but the 'squint factor' proved to me time after time that
your trebele clef is the best compromise with the 7x5 grid without
becoming an ampersand

i reviewed the character set and here are my thoughts

after i thought about it ...
i like the hex and decimal symbols... kudos!

i think we need an Up and Down arrow more than a natural sign or
sharp. The natural is only relevant in the context of a key signature
and that's WAY outside the capabilities of the display.
i'll grant you that having a dedicated flat instead of a plain
lower-caste "b" is a a little more readable, but the ASCII crosshatch
will do fine for a sharp.

For myself, i'd never use the clefs or the note symbols but i can't
think of anything MORE applicable so they win by default.

that's my $.02

and , as ever, THANKS for all your hard work

Funny you should mention this. No one has ever asked me if I plan to
donate my source code. I'm just sitting quietly waiting for my spec
to be designed in. Then I can share my proprietary pricing. Let's
see, I have to pay for my computer, STK500, 1000 lines of code at the
going price; it's going to make that FrontPanelExpress 5U panel seem
cheap! :-J

Seriously, we don't have to label the default message as an engineer
would. We could put some 'cute' saying ... analog rules, long live
analog, analog synthesists make better lovers (oops ... too long), my
favorite analog synth, sample this!, ...

I agree with your music symbol observation. I'll probably never use
those either. I do use the hex and decimal (sideways). I've also
done some small O1 - O4 and I1 - I4 (sideways) to label outputs or
inputs.

Up and down arrows make sense. I put a C:\> prompt on the display
yesterday and found out my display doesn't have a \. Neither does the
one we selected. There may be other base characters to add. It is
easy to reprogram the characters so this may be no big deal. It is,
however, one of the reasons I suggested we tie the reset line to the
CVS to ensure that they are always synchronized.
