USB key

USB key

2005-03-02 by jme_cd

with all the talk about usb here, i have wanted to make an mp3 player
that interfaces via usb to the computer to download songs to it.
either this or a usb key (i'd say this is easier :D ).
at http://www.myplace.nu/mp3/yampp4.htm their mp3 is recognised at a
drive. is it that simple that all i need to to is add a usb chip or do
i need to write code to get it to work like this?
also any sites/help on making something like this would be great too.

thanks for any help
jamie

Not sure if this helps.. . but might be relavent:
----- off bascom mailing list:
The January 2005 issue of Circuit Cellar Magazine has an article on a PC
controlled R/C device that uses a general purpose AVR ATMEGA 8 in an
implementation of USB 1.2 that they say costs less than $10.

After seeing this article, I found the code and design info for the USB part
is posted at :
http://www.cesko.host.sk/IgorPlugUSB/IgorPlug-USB%20(AVR)_eng.htm

Ian
------
Looks pretty interesting.. I am definitly going to look into this after my test :)

Yeah. I think my link before wan't really coherent.

So you have seen the yammp project. Has anyone bought one of these?
The prices are foreign to me.. and am wondering if there is a place
where i can buy these parts in America.

thanks

Lee:
Foreign prices ?
Why don't you just select US$ as currency in the shop ? ;-)
I have no distributor in the US, but I have several hundred customers all
over
the world, and still haven't had a single complaint. (Well, there was this
dude in Singapore that dumped the kit in the wastebasket, because it was
way too complicated, but he didn't actually complain !).

Jamie:
With the PDIUSBD12 chip, you need a fair amount of code in the player
to make it work.
That's why I skipped that chip, and used the FTDI chips instead.
As we were using a custom filesystem to maximize the use of card or disk
space, the player wouldn't be able to pop up as a standard drive anyway.

Using a USB-key for memory is a different, but also somewhat complicated
way. That would require ther player to implement the USB Host protocol.
While the chips (like the SL811HS) are avilable, the software side if it is
relatively complicated, even though some shortcuts can be made.

I2C is the same as "TWI" in Atmel products.

Jesper,
thanks for the info. Also your mp3 are really good, i hope i can make
soemthing as good.

basically, when you plug your mp3 players into the computer, are the
usb chips automatically recognised and added to my computer as a drive
or do you need to write code to get this to happen?

also have you got stuff on how you got your SD cards to interface to
your avr?

thanks
jamie
