You might want to dissect the "We All Die" patch to get an idea how to get the oohs and ahhs. Rainbow Jimmy

Cool, I'll open the AN1X factory bank in my AN200 editor and look for it in the patch listing.

It's not an arpeggio but rather a 4 step sequence at 90 bpm stored with the voice - C3 and C4 triggering both voices. Each note is a whole measure, HOLD is enabled and the Seq is stored with the Voice. The Voice is in Split Mode. Basically, each scene is set to Sync+FMSlv with maximum, negative settings for Sync and FM - the Pitch Dpth value controls the 'iiiie' sound but only because the VCO1 is transposed down three octaves! The 'd' sound appears to be the result of VCO2 which is transposed upwards nearly two octaves, but the fine tuning is nearly 40 cents flat. Again, play with the Pitch Dpth and it makes sense. Both scenes in the voices are VERY similar - mostly differences in Pitch, Fine Tuning and Pitch Dpth. The split in combination with the Seq is how the DIE die DIE die effect is achieved. Whoever thought this is up was friggin' brilliant. Jon

It sounds completely different when played on the AN200 but I definitely hear the osc. sync. The AN200 doesn't have split mode and I'm not sure if the sequencer is the same as the AN1X's. > It's not an arpeggio but rather a 4 step sequence at 90 bpm stored with the voice - C3 and > C4 triggering both voices. I can hear it say "we all die" using plg150an(scene 1 only); the step sequencer is an essential part of the patch. An equally mysterious patch for DX-7 people: in sysex bank 0042 is a patch called "Why 2". Play a note near mid C and a male voice clearly says "WHY!". No idea how they got a DX-7 to talk...

> I can hear it say "we all die" using plg150an... When I send the "we all die" patch from AN expert editor, I can hear the "we all die" voice.. When the same patch is loaded into userbank from smartcard file, I don't hear quite the same sound. Odd...

No idea > how they got a DX-7 to talk... The Yamaha computer that was out about the same time as the DX7 and DX9 and with the same chip (CX5M, was it?) used to have a speech command. Accordingto Dave Bristow, Yamaha's demonstrator at the time, the command was only in the Japanese manual because, according to Yamaha, the computer only spoke Japanese. But he was able to get it to speak several European languages with a heavy Japanese accent by putting in almost joke-Japanese - e.g. `haro' for `hello.' It worked, too. He used to demonstrate this, and I've been there when he did it. So in theory the DX7 should be able to say a few things, though in practice it may not have the command structure for it? - Andrew

A common add-on for DOS was a "speak" program that made the PC speaker simulate text-to-speech. No sound card mind you, just the inherent PC beep speaker.

> You can make anything with a programmable 'beep' simulate speech. Here Giblet has gone and poked his face right out of the window into the fog. "You" (who? scientists maybe?) can make "anything" (what? methane, a Casio watch, maybe your car horn?) with a programmable 'beep' (like your car?) simulate speech (what language?). Gilbert, the abilities of any synthesizer depend upon the design. You are mistaken in thinking that the AN series of synths has a simplified means of emulating speech. The programmable beep that you speak of must be modulated with a complex waveform to produce an output that has the intricate qualities of speech. The AN series has only a simple set of internal waveforms available for modulation (sine and pulse being the most prevalent). There is no "audio in" function in this synth. You shouldn't presume that producing a sound resembling speech is an easy task. It requires special algorithms, programming and wave storage. Again: The "We All Die" patch is a masterpiece, very clever and very complicated to produce. Jon has done an excellent job of dissecting it for us to examine and possibly modify. 'You' == anyone who knows how to modulate speech with an oscillator. There are lots of white-papers and books on the subject. A PC speaker is driven by a square wave generator whose only programmable parameters are duty cycle and frequency. If one can make THAT talk, then one can make a dog's squeak-toy talk if one is persistent enough. No algorithm is required at the an1x end -- only at the PC end. While the interface to an AN1x's oscillators is indirect and primitive compared with the PC's directly-programmable oscillator, it can't be all THAT difficult to synthesize short waveform sequences on a PC and transfer those to the synth. I've played with speech synthesis under DOS (I *am* a scientist) on a PC but maybe I should shut up until I actually DO it on an an1x... Don't hold your breath on that - it just isn't worth the effort. There are several TTS examples available on the web, in assembly and C languages. One can use them to observe the waveforms of those words one wishes to duplicate on the an1x and 'simply' duplicate the waveform. (What could be simpler, eh?) This would be an interesting exercise, but a total waste of time. A Triton, or any other sampler, can talk its fool head off right out of the box.

>A Triton, or any other sampler, can talk its fool head off right out of the box. The Waldorf Microwave 1 has a speech synthesizer that, unfortunately, wasn't included on my Microwave II. There was an old Commodore64 program called S.A.M. that did a pretty good job of speech synthesis. (You just typed in phrases/sentences and it would speak them.)

Didn't mean to start a flame. I'm not a scientist, but I've played one at work in the past... PCM through a PC speaker is painful enough to force confessions from hardened criminals. My pint is that the AN1x and its buddies don't have the programmability to do much exciting stuff. Hi, well, there's a software named Cantor from Virsyn that can create synthetic speach, vocals and choir sounds... Very simple choir sounds can be created using PWM... FM/Ringmod combination or prefiltered FM/Ringmod can do nice vowel sounds too... More sophisticated ones need formant synthesis or formant filters (at least 3 parallel bandpass filters). ...Summa On 10 Mar 2005 at 9:28, Dale Kay wrote: > > http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/audio.htm > > another fellow musician and programmer... he has a lot of tools and > stuff to play with... see his audio programs...(i.e. say it) > > dale > > Administrator for Kay-Net.com > admin@... > Lancaster CA > > Band Web pages > Inquisitor Betrayer > http://www.soundclick.com/bands/7/inquisitorbetrayermusic.htm > Angel's Wings > http://www.soundclick.com/angelswings > > Are you a musician that needs to promote yourself or tell everyone > about your musical event? > promotions_n_events-subscribe@yahoogroups.com > is designed just for this. > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Dan > To: AN1x-list@yahoogroups.com > Sent: Thursday, March 10, 2005 6:34 AM > Subject: We All die (was Re: [AN1x] re: atmospheric choir > > > > >A Triton, or any other sampler, can talk its fool head off right > out of the box. > > The Waldorf Microwave 1 has a speech synthesizer that, > unfortunately, wasn't included on my Microwave II. > > There was an old Commodore64 program called S.A.M. that did a pretty > good job of speech synthesis. ok got it wrong (no suprise for most here, I do get wires crossed between my ears...) it is Miriam that he has and he cant get it to install correctly to even try to use. He has a mac and it wants a nic card to authorize too, so he bought a usb one and guess what, does not work... he has been working with that a few months since the sale on it... but that is now treading OT for the group... if anyone here can help on it, do email off list and I will give you his email to direct contact as I know he would like to get that up and running. It's candor that Klaus Schulze has a fond likeing too (thinking I might have that right)... (which by the way he isn't doing too well, real sick, see his web site...) But I have to say, I have vocoders on a lot of things here, ION, MS2000, Trition Extreme, Chameleon (sound art's)my current fav is using the extreme... I have samples if any wished to hear.. drop load as they are rather large...I never bought the chip for the DarkStar... or I could have added that to the list... Using the filter queen, I have also been able to alter voice, which I am thinking to try to move this back to topic (near anyway) is the one of the keys to using an200 types, the filters. dale --- In AN1x-list@yahoogroups.com, "Dale Kay" <admin@k...> wrote: > I believe my band member has that one and another one which he can create singing voices...
