unit works great with audio and midi cables removed?
that is, it does not turn it self off?

I thought power supply right away, as the unit came with the
incorrect 9v adapter. I purchased a 12v unit, configured it for the
  proper polarity, same behavior.

With all the cables removed it does the same thing. But it's erratic
and unpredictable. One minute it works fine, next minute it restarts.

I also noticed that there is a humming noise present that gets less
intense if the volume is in the middle, at 12 o'clock. If the volume
gets increased or reduced, the humming gets louder. (and sometimes it
restarts) Also, if you decrease any of the parameters using the panel
knobs the flickering seems to subside. It's almost as if the unit is
drawing too much power when the LED's are all lit up. The more LED's
lit, the more it flickers, and the more likely it will reboot. This
includes the segmented display, keypad, and little red LED's. It's
gotta be a power supply problem. I've tried replacing the wall wart
to no effect, so it must be interior. Sometimes just tapping on the
unit makes it reboot, but like I said, I checked for loose
connections between the boards, and loose grounds.

I'm lost!

guessing something is drawing more power like you noticed.. it may be beyond simple fixes, take to repair place.

Otherwise, you will have to dig in. You will need a service manual and some equipment to check it out. Most in this area charge $45 an hour or so, unit is worth? Hard call, I know I be digging in on it but there is a tie where even I would either give to someone with a service manual or buy another.

One idea I would do, (note I said " I ", may not be for you), pull the synth board out, power it up and see what it does. I read in a few posts that the unit works with the board out as a midi controller/sequencer.
All that will tell you is, if it starts to behave right, the synth card is pulling in the power, as that is what I am thinking, a big draw... all guess work without seeing the unit and knowing the service manual.

Review the cost to repair to a used one.

You did say for a while there you did use a 9 volt power supply and not the 12. There is a chance that the lower supply may have damaged the unit over time.

All I said was basic electronic TS stuff... if you can review the service manual, there might be some clear notes in there that mention this type of failure.

I asked about the cables in case of a floating ground, bad plug in the unit shorting out etc. Thought it best to ask if you gave it a try with all removed other than power. Wasn't if Jon that asked if the power plug was tight? I am sure you checked that too right?

I did check everything obvious. I've tried the unit without anything
hooked up to it, no difference. I'll try running it sans-synth card
and see if that has an effect. I've got an e-mail into yamaha
service, I'll see if they can send me a svc manual. Though I hate the
idea of troubleshooting and replacing tiny surface-mount
components... I just bought this thing, and the PO refuses to return
my emails.

I thought I'd be better off buying locally, but I guess it's best to
stick to ebay where you at least have feedback to check a seller's
integrity. I just wish I'd have gotten this guy's contact info so I
could trek out to his house for an up-close and personal chat... (and
perhaps a little violence!)

I shy away from the last part, isn't worth it... not in the lesser dollar case anyway... ;-)
I have been in your shoes... it wasn't easy for me either... but live and learn...

I think it might be the encoder as you said you had to deal with it with pressure... check that area...
if you get the manual, I would be interested to know the contents myself..

good luck

I'm going to dissasemble the encoder and check to make sure
everything's making contact in the right places. I'm already out $130
and calling it a loss, so time to start pulling stuff apart.

I'm a ham radio guy, so i've got some skills. Hopefully they'll pay
off!

caution there mr. robertson.... ;-)
most of the encoders have springs, that fly to all 4 corners and that black hole or hidden crevice which all things you need fall into... those guys are real small..

next is some use plastic with copper/some other metal traces that tear easy..

the lube inside, if any, is also special, does not like sweat, esp. human type... tends to corrode... best to get part number, and see mouser/digikey/global etc...

of course not all encoders are the same either in how they handle the encoding... with luck, you got a part number to look up, mouser has a good web site.. if the manufacture is on there, peek there too...

have you ever re-keys a lock? that is what I have flashing in my mind... pins, springs etc... but on a smaller scale...

After using the unit without problems for about 1/2 hour yesterday it
started having the problem again. I noticed that the wall wart got
VERY hot, much more than normal.. So I'm going to look for a possible
short in the PSU connector on the main board.
