most of the encoders have springs, that fly to all 4 corners and that black hole or hidden crevice which all things you need fall into... those guys are real small..

next is some use plastic with copper/some other metal traces that tear easy..

the lube inside, if any, is also special, does not like sweat, esp. human type... tends to corrode... best to get part number, and see mouser/digikey/global etc... 

of course not all encoders are the same either in how they handle the encoding... with luck, you got a part number to look up, mouser has a good web site.. if the manufacture is on there, peek there too...

have you ever re-keys a lock? that is what I have flashing in my mind... pins, springs etc... but on a smaller scale...
