The outputs on my An1x have hardly any output. It seems like they put out some sound and then fade off really quick. The headphone output works fine but the main left and right is very low. Any ideas what could casue this? It was working fine and then nothing.

TIA,
Jake

Yikes!

Jake, I've not heard of that problem with an AN1x. Has anybody else on
the list?

Did your AN1x ever exhibit the infamous 'popping and clicking' sound at
start-up? If so, did you (or a previous owner?) ever have the repair
affected by Yamaha? I ask these questions only to see if there's any
relation between the old problem (the audible crackling) and the
problem you've descibed (audio drop-off.)

I'd hazard a guess this is a service issue and encourage you to contact
Yamaha Customer Assistance or a local Service Center. Prefably one that
you TRUST!. FWIW - I had the hardware repair for the 'old' problem
completed some time ago and have never had a reoccurence.

HTH,

Jon

nope...no clicking or poping at all. Just very little output. Do you have
a number to customer service? Also do you think it would be bad to use the
headphone output for now? Becasue I use this synth live and have gigs
coming up. Also could it be some how one of my other pieces of gear that
casued the problem. I have a rolls rack mixer and a korg mono poly running
through it too. With an older yamaha mixer I had the mono poly would cut
the output on the rest of the synths to almost nothing. I think it was just
the mixer tho.

TIA,
Jake

Sometimes the doctor has to ask personal questions that may embarrass you
like, "How far was your nose in the young ladies room before she slammed the
door on it?" In your case we'd have to ask, "What are/were you running your
outputs into? The output circuitry is looking for a standard line level
load such as a mixer, keyboard amp or similar input, and without the proper
load for the An1x final amps all sorts of bad things may happen in the
signal chain.

It is being run into a rolls 10 channel stereo line mixer. Which then runs
into a 16 channel peavy mixer.
should be ok

Re: [AN1x-list] Re: outputs

On first thought, it sounds like it has to go on the bench... but wait. I
had some TERRIBLE problems with mine after loading up some patches, so I
re-initialized it to the factory settings and it fixed everything. The
re-init procedure is in the back of the manual somewhere. hope this works
for you

Go here...http://www.yamaha.com/service.htm

The only way to determine where the problem lies is, as Ed implied,
through process of elimination. You're running the synths to a Line
Mixer and then to a main mixer, right? So, unplug everything and
reconnect each instrument individually. I'd suggest removing one or
the other mixer from the equation to begin with and repeat the
exercise with each mixer. If the Yamaha continues to misbehave in
each circumstance then at least you have something definite to take
to Yamaha tech support.

I suspect it will okay to run off the headphone output for the time
being. Depending on your monitoring situation, i.e., mono vs. stereo,
you might require a stereo y-cable.

Let us know how it works out.

Re: [AN1x-list] Re: outputs

ok another addition to the problem. I went to use my an1x last night and
tried the normal outputs and to my amasement they worked fine. I used it
for about an hour and a half and then the problem started happening again.
Hooked it up to the headphones and all was happy again. So it sounds like
it is heating up or something and then cutting out.

any other ideas?

This is conspicuously similar to the behavior exhibited with
the "old" problem of audible 'popping and clicking' sound at start-
up - until the unit reached a normal operating temperature (jokes and
comparison to a REAL analog will ensue...) I'm speculating, i.e., not
fact - just opinion, that the problem with your AN1x is related to
the other known problem.

Of course, I could be wrong. ;-)

Did you reinitialize your AN1x as suggested? This has been known to
clear seemingly random acts of strange behavior in the AN1x. Isn't
the key command '7+8+9' while powering the unit up? Then it should
prompt you with a selection of init options - just choose ALL and
reply YES.

Peter K. - if you're following this thread - what was the weirdness
your AN1x displayed. Didn't you have something along these lines or
just the 'popping & clicking' problem?

I thought I had the same problem, my An1x kept dropping in volume after a while and I thought it was broken,
until I realised that I had actually accidentally turned the volume down over midi, whilst playing with my drummachine, its a quasimidi 309 and it sends controller data on all knobs, (because I also had the an1x channel selected in Cubase)
maybe your problem is similar, check for incoming midi signals to the AN1x
cheers,

Re: [AN1x-list] Re: outputs

2001-07-13 by Phil

Hi all,

Just dropping to say that my outputs, at times, have severely dropped in
output. Like about a tenth of the normal volume. Maybe this has happened
half a dozen times? Solution has always been to switch off, then back on
again. Haven't pinpointed the exact cause, but it always seems to have
occurred on patches that are quite loud in themselves. I may have 'clipped'
or overloaded something along the way.

I also had the 'snap', 'crackle', and 'pops' when I first got it. I put it
down to to something becoming corrupt when switching the synth off while it
was still playing (eg. the long sustain of a pad). It would only affect the
current patch (plus one or two others) but the rest of the synth would be
fine. Eventually, even the corrupted patches would come good (after warming
up?). Anyway, it's not happened for years since ensuring everything is
silent before powering down.

Phil

Thank you very much for the reply, Jon. Do you happen to know how much this
repair may cost if the unit is out of warranty (I live in the U.S., too)?

I hate sending out my AN1x, though - it is the master keyboard in my home
studio... :-(

Thanks,

I'm sorry I don't know what the cost would be for out of warranty. I
had my repair completed after a few months of owning the AN1x. At the
time the AN1x had been on the market for maybe a year or so and
nobody seemed to know if the problem would become worse and if so,
how quickly...

Oh, yeah - I understand.

Hi Jim,

I actually did try system reset a few months back - 3 key on numeric pad (I
don't remember which one) and power on, or something like that, right? Even
with the reverted factory presets, I was getting the problem, so it's not
soft problem.

Well, headphone outs are working for now, so I guess I'm not going to send
my AN1x for a while :-) Phone outs feeding my Mackie isn't too bad,
actually. I know what you mean about focusing on other things that's been
neglected, though....

Thanks!
