Mod Matrix and pitch bending

Mod Matrix and pitch bending

2001-06-21 by Jerry Aiyathurai

I have been beating myself up trying to do one of those minimoog
style pitch bends, the ones where one oscillator bends up a fifth and
the other stays the same.

Can anyone help me with this. I don't know how to read the manual.
Specifically the chart in page 10 of the data list book. How do you
make sense of the three sources columns (CC AT, Vel KeyRND, and Key
Trck)? are they representative of the universe of sources in some
way? (In what way?)Secondly, how can I find out which
controller/destination pairs are active at the DIRECT setting? I find
this chart confusing and am wondering if someone has figured it out.

For example, from reading the chart, VCO2 pitch would appear to be
controllable by keytrck and nothing else. However I know that it
responds to the pitch wheel at the DIRECT setting. It would be
helpful to read the possibilities off the chart instead of trial and
error on every parameter pair.

Back to the minimoog fifth bend, I have figured out two ways to
approximate it without VCO2 pitch. They are :
1) use oscillator sync, tunes appropriately, and
2) dedicate the pitch envelope (modulating one of the oscillators) to
this trick, controlling pitch envelope depth with the pitch wheel.

The osc sync thing kinda sounds weak and the I hate to lose the pitch
envelope, so I am wondering if there is a better way to do this than
what I have found.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers,

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

The table on p10 refers only to the Control matrix function. As you have
guessed the (CC AT, Vel KeyRND, and Key Trck) columns indicate which are
the possible control sources for a given parameter. Not all sources can
operate on all parameters! Also the data range and method of applying a
source controller may behave differently when mapped to a different
destination parameter (although most simply operate by adding the source
controller value to the destination parameter in the range +/- 64
units).

For VCO2 pitch you have read the table correctly. i.e. the only source
controller that can be used is Key Track (such that the oscillator would
change tuning across the keyboard range).

However you should note that this limitation is due to the fact that the
AN engine provide dedicated Pitch Bend UP/DWN control mappings
independently for each scene! Hence to achieve the affect you want all
you need do is simply adjust the bend range setting of each scene using
the PB UP/DWN controls.

IF you are using An1xEdit, these controls are shown on the Matrix page
for convenience....but are not strictly part of the Matrix function and
do not relate to the table on p10.

Thanks Gary. A simple and elegant solution.

I understand that the pitch bend wheel is not covered by this chart.
That's cool, I can figure that one out. Do you think it would be a
reasonable interpretation if I assume that the 8 knobs, the mod wheel
and the ribbon controller(s), are described by the CC AT column? My
assumption is based on the fact they can all send CC's.

Thanks for your help.

Correct!

Alternatively if you use my An1xEdit application, the popup menus used
for parameters highlight entries that are not valid for selection based
on the current allocated control source!
