[AN1x] Electone patches

[AN1x] Electone patches

2012-02-21 by Nate King

Hihi

Richie's patches( mellotron, epianos , and cs-80) have me wondering if
there's any good electone style patches out there. Like ex-1, gx-1, d-80
etc. I've been really looking for that brassy string sound of late. For a
point of reference, YouTube metronomy "the looks".
I haven't tinkered with the cs-80 patches much lately, so it's possible I
should just tweak those.
And if not, I'll work on them and share. I'm just looking for the easy way
out late on a monday night.

Thanks and happy synth-ing!

Re: [AN1x] Electone patches

2012-02-23 by richardon

Hi Nate

Some people think An1x being an Prophet clone. Thats not true. Its an CS80
clone. I am shure.
You can see it regarding the waveform both machines producing. They are same
way out of phase. Thats no error, because we dont hear that. Also the ring
modualtion, Ribbon are typically CS80. There is one An1x preset sound that
is close to CS80 brass. But it is using not enough feedback. Feedback ist
changing everything. Emphasing the low frequencies of the Waveforms but also
totally the behavior of the filter. Making it more resonant like a voice, a
formantfilter. And thats typicall for CS80. Its alway sounding a little bit
like a voice. Its no problem to test this. Here you ll get the Arturia CS 80
Demo for free :
http://www.arturia.com/evolution/en/products/cs-80v/intro.html
I didnt spend too much time with the CS80 Sound. Perhaps you already found
out a trick i used for the mellotron sounds too. Using the digital delay as
a combfilter (in German Kammfilter) Do you know whats a combfilter ? Its a
filter with a periodical Spectrum
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comb_filter
Its good if you are able to calculate this, but you can just recognice : If
I am using a digital delay with much feedback i will get a Comb Filter. And
such a comb filter sounds like a formant filter, like a voice. Just test it.
Use the CS80 Sound and Digital Delay=127 with Feedback 80. Time 0.1-0.5 ms.
Now the sound gets even more vocal and vintage. More vintage because such a
comb filter is producing heavy phase errors like filters in vintage
instruments.
Theres another interesting fact. What is physical modelling ? Its just using
a lot of digital delays to simulate wave propagation. A Comb Filter line.
Nothing special.

Other tricks to produce vintage fealing :
(I didnt use for CS80 sound)

Keypress Detune :
In Polyphonic Analog Synths the Oszillator are rotating. If you press 6
times a note its always another oszillator you will hear. It makes sense
because then there is no OSC that is used more often than the others an will
get older because of this reason.
But no analog OSC is perfect in tune and therefore everytime you ll press a
key tuning changes.
Use the AN1X Matrix : Keyrandom : Scene Detune : around 30

Streched Detune :
A piano is an good example for streched detuning. Also Runing of a
mellotron is streched.
Use the AN1X Matrix : Keytrack : Fine Tune OSC 1 / 2

Inner Detune :
Using streched detuning only for one OSC, OSC1 and OSC2 will be Keytrack
detuned.
But you can achive the same using a littele bit of FM Modulation.

Random Detune over Time :
I used this for the mellotrons via Free EG. Speed of the Tape is not stable.

Noise :
Thats very important. Always add a little bit of noise to avoid a digital
Charakter. An1x provides white noise. A bandpass noise would be better. In
some cases you ll have to create this via FM Modulation. I did this for the
Mellotron Flute.

Yamaha GX1
Thats the famous Yamaha Elecone Organ including an CS80

Yamaha GS1
Thats an mixture of DX7, Clavianova including analog filter functions ?
I germany its very famous becauase of this song :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Llvc4TMWphI&feature=related
I emulated the GS1 sound already on my Triton LE.
Demo GS1 Triton Le
http://home.arcor.de/richardon/2008/tanz.mp3

Would be no problem for An1x
But i never use the sound on stage. I dont like it :-)

Cheers

Re: [AN1x] Electone patches

2012-02-24 by Nate King

Hi Richie, thanks for the long response. I will bow to your knowledge as
I've never actually put my hands on either. I have messed with formant
filters and understand (sort of) the science behind a comb filter.
Anyway, I agree the cs80 sound is too indulgent for "actual" use. What I'm
after is that more brassy sound that still sounds like a string. Something
with a clearer attack phase, with the decay remaining somewhat string
sounding and with some vibrato. Very much like the brass of an electone( I
guess?). It'd be fun to get close to those big sounding home organ sounds
and then tweak them from there. I could of course do that with a real d-85
or 415, alas the an1x seems just as well suited, and I've already got one,
and it clearly eats less space...... :)
I know the voicing is roughly the same, so I figured you'd already have
done the grunt work:) I'll scope the cs80 patches and see what I can figure
out.
I'd also like clone a yc-10 or yc-25 type sound. That sort of plucked
string that still sounds like tri/ sine. Good times:)
anyway, if there's some patches in the ole library that you could point me
towards, I'd be much obliged.
