If you're just starting out playing drum and bass, I'd recommend software. You need a computer anyway to record. Get Acid, Rebirth, and Cool Edit Pro. Once you've got those figured out and you decide you need a screaming analog synthesizer for weird noise madness, sonic mayhem, and youthful indiscretions, get the AN1x.
