Algebraic equations

I have to algebraic expression stored in two variables which I want to process, i.e., add, multiply, divide.  When I try, my calculator forces me to switch to "approximate" mode instead of simplifying the resulting expression which I want to obtain.
Can anybody help?

Do the expressions have coefficients with a decimal point in them or have variables which have numbers with a decimal point (eg. a*x+b where a has 2.5 stored in it, as a separate variable)?

You may also have to set flags -2 and/or -3 to symbolic.

coefficients of expressions were integers.  i didn't store the value of variables in separate variables.

i then consulted with the user's guide Chap-5 (pgs 5-1 and 5-2) where the guide gives an example of simplification of two algebraic expressions.  One of the expressions have number pi and I think that why my calculator asks me if I want to switch approx mode.  When I say no i get the error message "EVAL Error: Mode switch cancelled"

don,
system flags ->2 and ->3 are set to symbolic.
to simplify the problem my calc. does not simply the example that i referred to in users' guide.  but it asks to switch to approximate mode.  when i said no, i get he error

My calc. simply doesn't simplify the expressions when one of them has a constant but forces to switch to approximate mode (It does simplify the expressions as long as they don't have constants.)  In this sense it doesn't perform the example given in Chap.5 pages 5-2, 5-3 the way it is supposed to as one of the expressions has number Pi.
am i missing something or  can we  claim that the result of that example can't be obtained as shown in the guide???
can someone also try to verify that example?

if i'm missing something i'll have to hard-reset my calc. to return factory settings!!!

So you have pi*R^2 in A1 and g*t^2/4 in A2. And you like multiply them to get pi*R^2*(g*t^2/4) and then use the SIMPLIFY command? The only way I could get the 'approx. mode on?' warning is to have 3.14... in place of the pi. But this is in the hp49 (I don't have a 50g) so maybe there is a difference between the calculators. I'll have to let someone else continue helping you, as I'm at a loss at this point. Sorry.

There is a command called CASCFG that returns all flags involving the
CAS back to default.

Also, the CAS doesn't like to do anything when it isn't in radians.
You'll always need to let it switch in order for it to work.

ROM 210-7 CASCFG appears to change only some flags back to default:
Some in MODE, CAS and some in MODE, DISP. To put more flags back to
factory default, try this (assuming RPN mode and soft menus):
Left shift, PRG, NXT, MODES, FLAG, NXT, RESET

You'll notice the 50g is back to ALG mode and the always irritating
choose boxes are back. Also changed from DEC to HEX; flags -11 and
-12. Although these are not visible in MODE, FLAGS, you can change to
DEC (just to see how they were changed): -11 CF -12 CF. HEX is -11 SF
-12 SF. BIN and OCT are, of course, the other two combinations.

Ok, a couple of more things I just thought of, and THEN
I give up. It's just something you should keep in mind
in checking the things you've already checked.

If you're in a subdirectory and, for instance, have 2.5
stored in R but this R resides in a parent (or
grandparent, etc.) directory. The calculator will find
and use that R in your expressions. So, you might want
to check the parent directories for R, g, & t

The other thing easily overlooked by a newbie is that,
while 4 is an integer, 4. is not.

Don,
That is what exactly happened to me...
I, too, figured that late last night that I'd stored "a value" in R.  An that why the calc. was forcing me to switch approx. mode.
Pretty weird way of spending Saturday night.  But still happy that I cleared that out my way...
