Cards, connections, software and how?

Cards, connections, software and how?

2011-01-05 by Ryokyo Lyons

Everywhere you look online to buy a 50g, a pitch for a 2GB  SD card can't be far behind.
Is that address limit (2GB) in the OS, or is it strictly machine driven, because of the format involved at the time the tech was on the drawing boards?

I find myself wondering if there isn't some way to get around this by adapting the hardware to accept a USB drive One of the tiny ones, smaller than a USB connector itself. If there is some way to mess with this limit, and not bash the baby with a brick, I find myself wanting to extend this Idea, so that a larger capacity drive could be carved off in slices, and what you would have in the end would be a stack of "SD cards" on a mini thumb drive.

But as much as I know how to use the machine itself, I must profess a certain lack of knowledge about what and where the hardware/firmware boundaries are, and what those "hard coded" limits might be. I know that you can fiddle with the CPU speed a bit, and I know a few more tricks of the trade, just from being familliar with how far and how hard I've pushed the hardware and the software myself.

The reason that all this got started is that I now carry a very thick case of cards, which more resembles a wallet than my wallet itself. A week or so ago I found myself at a Research library, and found that I'd lost the case on the train, or left it at home. (I left it at home, and picked up my old wallet instead) Being a grizzled veteran who goes alll the way back to C/PM, I had back ups of all my programs with me--on the flash drive that I carry constantly, and no way to bridge the gap, since I don't carry a laptop/netbook/ implanted machine (It won't be as long as you think, stop snickering!)

Anyhow, I'm asking this for another reason. The day will come when 2 GB SD cards are as rare as the old plug in memory cards for the 48GX (that day may not be far off either) and I'd like to look to "workarounds" for what might become a memory shortage (my own or the calculator's) sooner than I (or anyone else) might be comfortable with.

Any thoughts?

2GB is the limit for FAT16, implemented on HP50G, and we dont need more, I using a old 16MB SD Card with all my HPGCC tests ....

I have the 50G with an HP 256Mb SD card, as has been mentioned in this forum user's of the 50G are attempting to use SD Cards which are far too large for even the 50G. HP recommends SD Cards no larger than 1Gb for the 50G as any larger will lead to a premature burn out of the 50G.

As I mentioned I have the 256Mb SD Card and will most probably never use all 256Mb.

Hope this helps.

Well, I'm something of a programming packrat. I keep everything I do, and everything that others do on the Net, meticulously sorted, so I have  A LOT of  programs, and a little bit of a ton of everything else. I also kept my 48GX Libraries that I used for years in the Aerospace Industry (I used a 48GX for the first time the week they came out, and never looked back. I remember it mostly for the financial sting; it cost me an entire pay check at one go! I considered trying to get a loan to buy one!)

So I carry an unbelievable amount of stuff. I even have Saturn based stuff by the boatload, just in case I run into another 48GX someday.

It seems to me I do remember what you mentioned about the cards. If  1 GB is all the machine will handle, why is everyone pushing 2 GB cards? (Other than the most obvious reasons, that  is.)

and here's the kicker..

I still keep my slide rule on my desk :) Just in case..Old habits die hard.

Eh? Say what? There is no way that an SD card of any size will burn out or break the device in any way.

2GB cards will probably be around for a while, since there are still plenty of old devices that can't use SDHC or higher.

One reason that some writers are discussing 2 GB SD cards may be that 1 GB and smaller cards are getting a little hard to find on store shelves in some parts of the world, while 2 GB cards remain readily available.  I have not tried a 2 GB card in my 50G, but firmware of some of my other devices limits them to 1 GB.  When I try to use 2 GB cards, they either don't function or become very slow and prone to crashes.

I believe what was meant was, burn out the batteries quickly.

This recommendation was directly from HP when I purchased the device while in pharmacy school, first you lose the scroll bar and then slowly the 50G would burn out.

Judging by your comment I would say that you are somewhat skeptical, I would recommend that you contact HP calculator support and ask HP Calculator support to confirm my statement. If indeed you call HP calculator support I would ask that you consider that all support agents are not alike and you may receive recommendations that are different than my agent - if so take the recommendations with a grain of salt.

All in all just keep in mind that I am attempting to assist you and anyone else as the 50G is a great! calculator, I have used it in every science class I have up to graduating from pharmacy and math.

The information I provided is not in print, it is directly from HP calculator support.

Size of the SD card has no effect in battery life. Use of the SD card to write will as that is the highest power draw in the system, but size of the card doesn't matter.

If you have a 2GB SD card and it not working try create a 1GB partition

You might consider taking your support agent's recommendations with a "grain of salt" too. Or do you have special knowledge that your agent is more competent than others?

The FAT16 format tops out at 2gig max per drive, if I recall correctly.

Message 653 in this group recommends (among other things) using FAT16 over FAT32 because of a speed issue. See..
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/50g/message/653

I hope that informs your choice of cards.

***Only*** if you have it formatted in FAT32. FAT16 is instantaneous from the user perspective. It is the difference between scanning 65,526 clusters, and potentially scanning up to 268,000,000 clusters per access.

If you format your SD card of any size <= 2GB with FAT32, you will see a noticeable and annoying delay *every time* the unit powers on. If you format it with FAT16, it will not have any noticeable wait time.
