Keep in mind that I've only used an older version of the Conn4x program because I only have a 49g.
That said, Conn4x by itself only transfers files/directories, backs-up/restores, does screen capture and updates the rom. Unless the newer Conn4x is radically different, it shouldn't allow editing. The newer Conn4x is different in that allows the transfers to be done via USB (as I understand) and that is the only 'driver' that should be an issue (the 49g only has a serial interface). If you're already transfering files thru the USB, you should be all set.
The back-up file should not be opened, at least not with Conn4x, but I don't know if other software that came with the 50g will do that. The back-up file is a snapshot of your home directory plus the alarms and maybe the flags (I don't remember). So it's an aggregate file and in binary and was not, originally, meant to be edited (certainly not with Notepad).
Now, you can transfer individual programs (files) from the 50g and edit those. There are 2 icons in Connx4, one that has 1's & 0's and one with ABC. If you use the ABC icon the transfer is in ASCII an you'll be able to then edit the file in Notepad, but set the transfer to "TYPE 3" in the calculator. That's the bare-bones way of doing it and there are much more safisticated ways to create/edit programs on the PC and you may have gotten such software on the CD, but I've never used it so I can't help with that.
I hope that cleared up some confusion.
