I don't think there's a way to turn off this 'feature'. You just have to become diligent in deleting variables when you're thru with them. Or just use the HOME directory or create a scratch directory right below the HOME directory.

Come to think of it, didn't someone recently post a program to delete vars from all higher directories? Maybe that will work for you.
