i then consulted with the user's guide Chap-5 (pgs 5-1 and 5-2) where the guide gives an example of simplification of two algebraic expressions. One of the expressions have number pi and I think that why my calculator asks me if I want to switch approx mode. When I say no i get the error message "EVAL Error: Mode switch cancelled"

Date: Thursday, August 7, 2008, 11:04 PMDo the expressions have coefficients with a decimal point in them or have variables which have numbers with a decimal point (eg. a*x+b where a has 2.5 stored in it, as a separate variable)?
You may also have to set flags -2 and/or -3 to symbolic.
