i just got back to the nspire and checked and you're absolutely right--the nspire does copy the object to a new line it if you hit enter, you just can't edit the original object in place.
i don't know what mode i was in that i thought that didn't work, i swear i thought i checked that thoroughly. very sorry for the mistake.

like the 89 here: scroll up in history until your desired expression
is highlighted, then hit Enter. The expression is copied to the entry
line, and edit away.
Upgraded to Nspire CAS 1.4. TI nailed the upgrade process. No longer
have to search through the house for a paper clip; no longer have to
worry about fat fingering simultaneous buttons; don't even have to
download the upgrade file (but I already had, and it gives you a choice).
