Subject: Some cool patch ideas

OK, I am having so much fun with the modular stuff I can hardly contain
myself. I am trying to put together one really cool patch per night, make
some nice audio samples (for Paul) and document the thing for our future
patch archive.

Since I am not constrained by what I have done in the past with modulars
(which was nothing), I am trying not to do things is a generally accepted
method. In creating the patch I made tonight I tried two new things that I
thought I would share with the group:

1. I wanted a LFO to use for PWM on my two VCOs. However, I wanted the two
LFO signals to be 180 degrees out of phase going to the two VCOs. I have a
LFO in the Kenton, but I wanted something out of MOTM (and we don't have an
LFO yet). I wanted both my VCOs in the patch, so I didn't want to use one
for the LFO. So here's what I did:

I connected the output of my MOTM-100 S & H to the trigger input of a
MOTM-800 EG. With the sustain and release turned all the way down, the
attack and decay knobs can be used to shape a nice LFO waveform. The S & H
rate obviously controls the rate. I was very pleased with the variety of
LFO effects I could get with this combination. Since the EG has both "+"
and "-" outs, I had my two signals 180 degrees out of phase.

2. I wanted to try some more modulation of the filter with audio. So, I
decided one of the MOTM-120 sub osc outputs might make cool modulation for
the 420 filter. After playing with knob settings for a while, I decided
that I could remove all the incoming audio signals (IN1, IN2, IN3) and have
output with only FM modulation into the filter. So, I used my MOTM-120 as
a mixer for my two oscillators. I set the MOTM-120 output knobs on only
about 3 for the two input signals and 10 for the sub2 output. I placed the
MOTM-120 in cross mode with the oscillators tuned a 5th apart. The
MOTM-120 mixed output them became the only audio input into the 420 filter.
However, I placed that input in FM2 instead of any of the INs. And, I
used FM-1 for my EG over filter control.

This made some really cool sweeping synth sounds. I thought I would pass
this along that the filter FM can be used as the audio input with no other
audio inputs connected to get some very interesting results. An
interesting byproduct of this connection is that the mode switch had
little, if any, effect on the sound. I know this is not the way the filter
is supposed to be used. However, it sounds damn cool. Try it.

Until I get set up to document my patches with the GIF files Paul
mentioned, I am documenting mine in a MS word file in text so I can
recreate the patches later. I would be happy to post the MS-word files to
the list if file attachments of that size are OK with the list.

P.S. I know there are at least 20 of you guys out there patching your
hearts out and not saying a word. Speak up men! Tell us what you are up
to.
