And, to help you recognize them on schematics, the arrow points
away from the base on NPN (I remember it as Not-Pointed-iN)

Current flow is opposite the arrow direction.

NPN = Negative-Positive-Negative
PNP = Positive-Negative-Positive

Transistors are 3 layers of silicon with added ions (called 'doping
impurities').
