I would be grateful if some of you mention the MOTM to him.

Subject: [AH] filterbanks and ringmods
(I apologize to those on multiple lists - I'm asking this Q in a few
different places...)
Hey, everyone. Been awhile since I've been up here.
I'm currently writing a round-up for Recording magazine on filterbanks and
ringmods. The article will include a lot of additional side-information
around the subject, aimed at someone new to the area. I know a bit - as a
lot of you know, I used to design synths - but since nobody knows everything
(and I've been out of active circulation for awhile), I wanted to throw out
some questions and gather some more opinions.
1) Got any favorite albums that really show off good use of filterbanks or
ringmods to process other sounds? Heck, even the most recent Saab commercial
seems to use a filterbank on the lead guitar, but if you were going to
suggest some (preferrably currently-available) albums to a newcomer to get
educated, what titles come to mind?
2) In addition to buying new gear (the body of this article), of course,
there were a lot of synths with external audio inputs to allow external
processing. In house I have a Yamaha CS-30, EML-101, and Oberheim 2-voice
that allow this; I want to try to build a list of other suggested old synths
that are good for this work. Extra points to any that had triggers or
envelope followers (such as the Korg MS-20, which I used to use live, but
sold to get a rack-mounted filterbank), or knowledge of external boxes other
than the Korg MS-03 that could do trigger extraction. (I once even patched
an old Dennis CVP-1 to do this, by full wave rectifying an input, slewing it
a touch, and then using a threshold gate, but that's a bit painful for a
newcomer...)
3) Related to the above, have any favorite processing techniques you want to
share (and get in-print credit for)?
Take care -
- CM
