Hello, list. I got knocked off the list when I had to change my domain
name due to my ISP changing hands, then got busy building kits! Now that
I'm back and read the latest stuff, I just had to stick my 6 or 8 cents
in here;
Concerning heat shrink tubing; I too wondered why it was used in some
kits and not others (the '410 is the only one I have without it) I'm
using a Wagner Power Stripper (used for stripping old paint) on LOW
about 6 in. away. Use it quickly! The warning label says it can reach
1100 deg. F! Also, I did a parts check of my latest kit, a '700, and the
heat shrink is MISSING! (scary music stab here) Paul needs another
vacation <g>! The first shortage I've seen in all of 8 kits, an accuracy
rate of 99.999998% I figure. It just so happens I bought a bunch of it
from RS recently, so I'm good. Other uses; covering exposed bolts on a
swing set, and putting on the ends of my tennis shoe laces after I cut
them to a sensible length. And what's up with those laces these days?
I'm an old hippie, not a homeboy <g>.
Module layout; I was just mulling this one over myself when the topic
popped up here. Serendipity, or are we of one mind? ...(the
assimilations appear to be complete, Borg Paul)...anyway, my 11 module
Aries is laid out with sources (preamp/EF, 2 VCOs, 2 EGs, dual LFO,
S&H/noise) on the left, processors (VCF, ring mod, VCA, output) on the
right. I was going to wait for the flat rails and build a similar MOTM
cab. But as luck would have it, I found a WW2-era all-steel15U cabinet,
with a lid on top and door in the back, black wrinkle paint and 2 sturdy
fold-down handles on the side, which are GREAT for hanging patch cords!
The only catch (and you knew there had to be one) is a 1/2" vertical lip
at the top, which prevents me from using that top row. This is very
tough steel, so I think a cutting torch is needed. I know some guys that
do body work, this looks like a six-pack job.
Once that's done, I plan to put VCOs in the top row; because of the top
lid, this gives clear access to the trimmers, if needed. Filters in the
middle row, then everything else below (2 EGs, '700, '101, '820, VCA
bottom right, being the end of the chain). This is hardly concrete,
either, as someone mentioned earlier. A modular system is whatever you
want it to be. It reflects your particular style (or whatever you happen
to have in cabinetry). When This Old Rack is filled with MOTM, it's
gonna look like a prop from "Dr. Strangelove", so I'm calling it the
"CRM-114 Discriminator", since CRM are my initials, and that's one of my
favorite movies ("I think the self-destruct mechanism got hit and blew
itself up!"). I'll post some pix as soon as I can.
Someone mentioned awhile back of coming across MOTM while searching for
MOTU! LOL! I wondered how long it would be before that happened. Maybe
that was the plan...trust no one...
