In simple terms, you can think of the VCA as a volume control that can be
controlled by other things (like the 800 ADSR contour generator or the 320
LFO).
Take your 420 and set resonance to 10 and cutoff up to where you can hear a
sine wave coming out. Put that in the "in" on the 110. That's your sound
source. Take an output of the 320 and put that in the "CV" input of the 110.
Turn the gain knob on the 110 to 0. Set the "CV Mod" knob on the 110 to
"10." Connect "VCA out" to your mixer. Adjust the 320 rate and the 110 gain
to where you hear something happening.
What you're doing is modulating the amplitude of the sine wave that's coming
out of the 420. In simpler terms, the LFO is telling the VCA how to change
the volume.
If you haven't gotten it to work, perhaps you have the gain set too high,
thus allowing the signal to pass through unaltered. Or perhaps you have the
CV MOD knob set to zero, meaning the modulator isn't getting to modulate the
audio signal.
