This is what I'm thinking, too. The only thing is that, assuming that both
the module mounting holes and the counter-sunk rail-mounting holes are
centered longitudinally, you wont want to make the channel go behind the
latter.
I'm thinking that routing a careful, non-continuous channel using a router
table might be the best way to go, leaving the material behind the
rail-mounting holes.
I guess we'll have to see them first to decide how best to handle this.

This (drilling) occurred to me too, though I'm leaning more towards running
a
slot down the wood (with a router or a table saw), or putting a washer
between the metal mounting rail and the wood support to get the clearance
between the metal and the wood.
