It's also similar to what Deckard did in _Do Androids Dream of Electric
Sheep_ (the Philip K. Dick novel upon which _Blade Runner_ was based). He
had a price list of animals in his coat, and he always knew how many more
androids (replicants) he'd have to "retire" before he could afford his goat.
