Subject: 440 Built!

From: "David Bivins" <dbivins@...>

Hey all,

Today I finished the 440 I began yesterday. I'm actually listening to
it right now--have a measure on the 303 giving CV to the LFO in audio
range, then into the 440, and it's happily chugging away in the
background.

I used the prototype of this filter to record those audio demos, and,
though this is identical (save the prototype did not have negative
swing on the FM1) in function and sound, there's something about the
conventional panel layout and having it in the rack (sideways--no
more space) that invites further exploration of its limits, something
I had hoped to do in a few short days with the prototype.

All that is to preface: this filter sounds really great. It has a
sound like smooth, brushed suede; smooth the ear but something fuzzy
just on the edge. And the controls are great--VC resonance really is
fun, especially with audio frequencies. I'm twiddling some subtleties
right now that are quite nice.

But enough about that--let's talk about overdrive. This thing gets
∗really∗ thick and chewy sounding when you overdrive it (and it's
very easy too--though not inordinately so) in a very pleasing way.
You could multiply your VC timbral pallette immensely by using a VC
mixer into this one, playing with the amount of overdrive.

Mind you, I'm just playing with this 320-in-audio-range-wannabe
oscillator as the input, so I'm not really getting into it yet. But
I'm very happy to have this.

Right--the kit was one of the easier ones for me (I haven't done a
300 yet), pretty straightforward, took about 3 1/2 hours altogether--
it's placing the resistors that holds me up (R8, next to C7... you
sunk my battleship!).

Happy soldering!

David.
