Paul ranted a bit about the stability of Moog oscillators, other old synth
components and such. While I like stability and reliability as an engineer and as a
musician trying to get that 43rd take "just right", I have found it quite
interesting working with some old modulars and synths ∗because∗ of their
"instability". I have noticed that some of the old synths tend to push back and not
do just what you would want or expect every time. That form of feedback is
sometimes very refreshing creatively (and sometimes frustrating). I have found that
some of these old beasts have distinct personalities from these bits of randomness.
I guess my point is not to rule out that sort of unexpected bit of randomness that
provides greater expressiveness.
I also like combining "predictable" modules and controllers with unpredictable ones
to keep the randomness to musically useful levels. Note, this is different from
just inserting a list random S&H here and there. For example, I really like the
sound of Moog oscillators with MOTM oscillators because the scaling of the Moog
oscillators can "drift" vs. the MOTM oscillators, creating occassional detuning that
can add expressiveness.
OK, enough random rambling for tonight...Time to make some music...
